Ok, ornament as promised:

See the tiny Barred Rock?

And another that looks like our chicken runs behind the coop:

Happy New Year!

Very creative and very well done.

Hip surgeries have come a long way in the last few years. People recover so much quicker than they used to.Good luck. As for chickens eating eggs I think I have had this problem intermittently. I got three eggs a couple days ago. One was covered with yolk. I figured they ate the one that was cracked. It's like they immediately smell it or something and they go wild. I had one the other day that either fell hard on its way down or got pecked.little monsters!

Yall could try a very simple toy to help expell energy and maybe deter egg eating- those plastic containers that frozen juice are in? Get a drill with a drill bit that will leave big enough holes for scratch or cracked corn to fall out. Drill holes in plastic container randomly, careful not to get too close to top edge or it caves in when you put slight pressure drilling. Add scratch or cracked corn, securely pop on lid and toss into run. The first time you might have to give it a shake so your chickens will know what's inside. They have to kick and peck at it for it to roll and give them a treat! When winter is over the same container can be cut in half and used as seed starter cups:-) Frozen concentrate juices here start at $1, good for you and your chicken friends.

Fruit trees: I'd like to know what kind of apple trees any of you might have in your yards. Variety of tree? Did you plant it and when did it start bearing? Disease resistance? Spray or natural pest control program? Fruit maturity and use? (good fresh eating, baking, storage?) Any Mainers in this group have any grafting experience? What is your favorite tree, and why?

We just got our apple trees. This is their first winter, so I can't speak about hardiness or maturity or anything. DH is the big apple fan, so he picked out the varieties. I'm not sure I can remember them all, Cortland, Honeycrisp, Baldwin, -I think there are 3 others....

It certainly did get cold. So much so, that this is what we did this morning:
700

It took me a while to remember how to skate (this is a relatively new sport to me). The ice out towards the middle was smoothest, but then you got in the wind coming back. Still, we were out for almost 2 hours and saw a nice pair of eagles.

Mine were also new last spring but I havesemi-dwarf Wolf River, Duchess of Oldenburg and Fameuse. I wanted varieties that would mature at different rates. I also bought a Macintosh with that order but couldn't find a suitable spot to plant it and gave it to the neighbors across the street. One of their apple trees died a few years back, so they were happy to get a replacement. The people at the end of the road also have a few apple trees, so I'm hoping there's plenty of pollination opportunities (and I have 2 bee hives).
