Maine

Oddly I have been finding a lot of dead rats in mice. Found a dead huge rat on my door step this morning. Been finding dead mice here and there oustide for every few days for months now. No clue what's happening them.

I'll be battling rats for the rest of my life, I'm afraid.
Yesterday I found someone had shredded one of my pepper plants, - the only one without a hardware cloth collar, and the small corn plants are quickly disappearing. I put a snap trap and the rat zapper in with the corn, and I did get one mole yesterday.

Meanwhile, I ordered enough hardware cloth to line the floor of the chicken run where we had problems this winter. It will be a huge project. I think I'll have extra cloth, so maybe I should make corn collars, or large boxes for growing carrots. It seems like DH's smug "Guantanamo Farms" name for our property is becoming more appropriate!

Welcome to this thread, Collie, Feather Duster and Silkies.  Collie, hope you get settled soon.  Maine is a wonderful place to call home.  I'm in the Bangor area.

I've always been drawn to Maine. I grew up in the Adirondack foothills in New York, and my grandparents used to take me up to Maine a lot. It was my favorite place to be. Fortunately, it looks like thing are going in the right direction to get us there. I guess the boss man out that way is supposed to call my fiance within a day o two....hopefully with good news. Especially since we found a house we really want to check out (but of course, we don't want to go look at it until we get an answer....since Kansas to Maine is a long way to go). He's never been up there, as he's from Colorado. I've been telling him that when it comes to raw, natural beauty you can't beat Maine. Plus both of us prefer a cool climate to a hot one ;)

Nah not likely a cat. We have dogs at the moment(Used to be a lot of cats here) And they are fenced in. We have been finding the dead rats, and mice on both sides of the fence, and sometimes in the house. No real apparent reason for their death. They could have disease, or even parasitic issue. Strange as it sounds I've been seeing a lot of bot flies the last few years. none this year, but for the last 5 or six years been finding a dozen or so a season. So it could even be that affecting them.

Ive got a question. I've got some old eggs that I did a float test on. Some floated. Some sank. I cracked open some of the floaters. They smelled fine, looked fine. Any reason I can't hard boil them and feed them to the girls?
