Well, you got some very good advice from a big name man, Bob, on the HLF thread, even if it was spelled wrong: patience. If you are serious about the Delawares then you want to set yourself up well so that you aren't spending good money on good chickens and then not have a good set up. You can't get better directions on the breeds than that thread, although they are real 'old timers' and very serious about the purity of their breeds given how rare they are.
You know I would be very happy to have a little goat nanny here. We have nine acres and are about 10-15 mn from TSC in Lewiston. Something to think about. I do have children who'd want to visit it OFTEN but we have a great set up. I am not going to buy a goat but I did think about sheep for next year. I love chevre. If you want a place to put in some work and get some space then please come work here. I have more than I can use right now for land and only a few limitations on it. PM me.

Oh boy, what am I getting myself into with Delawares? :p I'll make sure my set-up is as best as it can be. Is there anything I should know that's not necessarily obvious to a newbie? Maybe I should scan my chicken coop plans for some feedback before I get the pricing quote... I am starting to get the feel of purity involving Delawares, though-- but I love things that are "purely" something, though, for some reason.

You can't believe how badly I wish I lived near Lewiston right now. Unfortunately, I live in Damariscotta-- too far away to come up for daily milkings. I'm going to poke around, though. Maybe some people in the community theater I'm involved with have land that wouldn't mind a little goat living there. Waldoboro is only 15 minutes away, and it's major farm country there. I'm there all the time anyway, lol. But if I ever end up moving to Lewiston... I might have to talk to you about that!! I have a friend in Lewiston who keeps wanting me to move there. ;)

MK- I hear you on this!! I'm 27 and my husband and I have a home on 2.5 acres, which I would love to fill up with lots of farm animals- chickens for now though! Next adventure will be nigerian dwarf goats. I love goats!! But...have you heard of the farm apprenticeship program that MOFGA does??? this might be something that would work out really well for you. If I didn't already have a spot of my own, I would totally do it. Here is the link : http://www.mofga.org/Programs/FarmApprenticeships/tabid/502/Default.aspx

I have, actually!! The farm I volunteer on is one that I got through the MOFGA packet I was sent. By the time I got the paperwork, I was committed to another job, but right now, I'm pretty much jobless (I have random hours at Pen Bay YMCA, but those are few and far between). Maybe I can finagle something with the farm where I volunteer... I can't believe I didn't think of that. I really wanted to apprentice before I had committed to nannying. But now I'm no longer a nanny. Hah.

When are you going to start on goats? Bill, the man who's my "boss" at the farm, recommended either Alpines or Saanens, but I'm leaning more toward Saanen. What appeals to you about Nigerians?

I'd start on the goats tomorrow if I could, but husband says one thing at a time! Which I suppose is smart, we have a lot of camping/hiking plans this summer..maybe next year. I want Nigerians for a couple of reasons one being that they are so darn cute!! on a more serious side though, they are very friendly and easy to keep, I like their smaller size, and they produce milk with a high butterfat content, making it sweeter. I love chevre, so I figure I could make some of my own!

You are in a good area for farms too! Jefferson and Whitefield are full of them...not to mention if you head towards Camden- Appleton is a great spot.
Funny you mention nannying- I did it for 3 years, then started working for headtstart, but I am going back to nanny for the family I was with just a few hours a week so I can finally finish school full time. When I was little I always told people I was going to be an artist who lived on a farm and was a teacher too....maybe I'll get there!!

ok, I need to vent. I just got off the phone with a former co-worker (sort of my supervisor) and we are friends outside work. I was on the phone with this person for 45 mins and since we don't work together anymore, I would think she would ask me what I've been doing. No, it was all about her and her pets and her new cat. well that's nice, but she knows I've probably not gotten another job and tells me all about how much money she spent on toys and food for her 4 birds- I'm sorry, I don't have that extra money to spend on myself, much less my pets. I was having an ok day until i talked with her, now I feel like crap. I have to stay on her good side if I ever want to be called back to work but I don't think I'll be calling her again anytime soon.

Hi Mainers. Thought I would introduce myself :) I live in Milford, ME and I have bantam cochins, polish, coturnix quail, and a lot of pigeons. I was showing my pigeons at the Windsor show last week so I'm sure I ran into some of you.
Anyway, I am looking for some oriental gamefowl breeds. Anyone in the state know of any local breeders?

Dont times like that just suck? Sometimes people just cant see outside their own little world and can really offend. My favorite is usually when a certain someone close to me complains about how busy they are. They have one child and work one day a week. I have 4 kids, 2 of whom are really active in school stuff (the other 2 arent old enough yet) and run a daycare 5 days a week. And yet she still likes to tell me how busy and "over worked" she is. It makes my skin crawl. But I have decided that she must do this with me because she needs the encouragement. I know shes not doing it to be mean or thoughtless, but still.......
