Maine

Ah, here I come, skulking back into the forum, tail between my legs. I attempted to really get into chickens this summer, but it didn't end so well, do to a mixture of going about things all wrong and a serious of unfortunate events, so to speak. *cough* I'm not giving up, but this time, I'm not going to go about things completely ***-backward.

I have a lovely new job (Target, cha-cha-cha!), and once I start repaying my parents, credit card companies, and hospitals the massive amount of debt that I've accrued, I'm going to try to get my own place. My parents are being lovely about chickens (or, at least, the idea of them), but I'd love to get closer to farmy places so I can learn more about dairy and beekeeping, as well as closer to my job. Does anyone know any places <30 minutes away from the Topsham area that have had places for rent in the past/possibly future that are chicken friendly?

Sorry to hear you've had a string of bad events. I can't help with the Topsham area, but I hope you get your feet back under you and are able to pursue your farm and chicken dreams.

SCG is pushing Showgirls, if you ever want some of those. They come with cookies, apparently. ;)

Hoppy, I always eat 2 or more or anything sweet. Bad habit.

I wondered where you had run off to. Sorry you had a bad experience, but you're right to keep at it. Remember that it takes planning and compromise to get where you want to go. Just make sure that each step you take is a small step towards your end goal, even if it doesn't outwardly appear to be so. For an example, my end goal is a large private agrarian property (not where I currently am) but my goal took me to the inner city in Baltimore for 4 years to get this far. I had to get an education to get a job that would pay for my habits. So it aligned with my goal even though it appeared on the outside to be the opposite of what I wanted.

I think the maine swaps are over until spring. i went to the waterville swap today, had a few visitors and 2 of us set up, weather was warm but I doubt it will hold. hopefully we can start up again about april (march if mother nature cooperates)

I'm experiencing another chicken emergency.... One of my Buff orps is off- she is walking a little funny, sitting down a lot, and seems to be shaking her head often. She is around 7 months old. If anyone has any hints to what might be going on, that would be great- My big question here is whether or not I can treat her of if I will need to cull her...

check her feet, make sure she has no wounds. is she eating? maybe give her some treats to see if she is interested. and most of all, don't panic.

I checked her legs/feet earlier- no wounds- she is eating a little- she keeps getting separated from the group- it takes her a bit to notice they all left- and when she is with them she is just sitting- sometimes with her head under her wing, and she is looking rather puffed up.

I won't panic

. My long standing worry with anything is that the whole flock will get it and die...If I have to cull her, I will, but I'd rather not.
