Maine

Oh, thanks! I really want to try the egg decorating, but of course, I have a bit of an egg shortage now. And to think I threw out all those egg shells when I wormed them... I wouldn't need a lot though, so maybe.
Or maybe I'll try the feed bags for a second year, and decorate eggs in the summer when I have an excess. My feed bag is wearing out.

I saw this idea for feed bags last weekend. feedbags made in to wine bags, some as wallets and small purses. so go crazy and make those, use up those bags.'

I am so the major downer of this thread right now- Lost Ginger the buff orp two days ago (Mareks maybe?), and found Cyrus the rooster dead on the floor of the coop this am- pretty unexpected- he was acting a little funny yesterday- hiding a lot, but still very sudden. Everyone else is healthy and alert- and someone new is laying eggs too- so lets hope everyone stays on the good path!

that's awful.

I thought about sending them in for a necropsy, but I was not prepared to do so, so we just buried them out back where sick chick went. DH found big rocks as "headstones" for them.

Sorry.

I hate the sudden unexpected loses. That's when the paranoia sets in and you wonder if it is something contagious, accidental or congenital. At least with predators you know the cause.

unless it's a weasel, one old time chicken farmer told me they will suck the blood which weakens then and not always go for the kill (although I have not found that to be true at my house)

Sorry.

I really like what you wove. It's beautiful.

Hope you found the egg thread. It's simple to do. I have no artistic talent whatsoever, and can do it just fine. Others are showing how to make wreaths with eggs and other cute decorations.

My first foray back into chicken (it was about 8 years without, too) we just put some olive oil, salt and pepper on it and roasted it whole in the oven. It was delicious. We've also fried some, but one of my favorites was putting them in a cast iron skillet over veggies, they were covered with oil, salt, pepper and italian or parm bread crumbs, can't remember, then baked. I put foil over it for most of the baking except the end and it was the most tender, juicy chicken, ever.

Aw, thank you. I did find the egg thread! They're all so gorgeous; I never would have thought to put little decals and stickers on them. I really like the wreath idea, too. I like how that recipe sounds; very simple and with veggies! It's nice to know I'm not the only person who's giving up vegetarianism in favor of happy chickens!

You people must stop saying you lack artistic talents! Gorgeous weaving, SCG's stunning eggs, not to mention Hoppy's glass work and emu eggs.
I think the Maine thread is a very talented group, and I'm an art teacher so you have to listen to me

Hah, thanks! :)

chicken recipe- when I'm out of ideas, I use chicken breast, slice them thin, then pound them out to about 1/4 inch thinkness- I think dredge in flour, put in an egg wash, and then coat with a breakcrump mixture- I use panko, garlic powder, fresh shredded parm. cheese and salt and pepper, and a good amount of olive oil to help with browning- then bake for about 20 minutes at oh....375 I think? it's sort of like a healthy version of fried chicken- and you can add whatever seasonings you want. You can also use it to make chicken parmesan.

Thanks! That sounds very good! :)

thanks buckabucka!
I make awesome chicken (that's what the kids named it)
take 1/3 of each, honey, bbq sauce, soy sauce and put in a baking dish with boneless, skinless chicken, roll it around in the sauce and then cook covered (in the sauce) for 30mins or until done. serve with the sauce dizzled on top, for a bit thicker sauce, uncover for the last 10 mins.

That sounds really really good. That might have to be what I try first... What temperature do I cook it at?

Mk crocheting is one of the easiest tings to learn! There are a few on line links that are step by step with pics and everything, or video. Once you learn two or three basic steps you can learn them all because they build on each other.

My favorite chicken recipe involves butterflying the breast so I can stuff it with gorgonzola and shredded spinach. I also add garlic or vidalia onions (whatever I have) or sundried tomatoes or mushrooms and the kicker is when I have enough money I wrap it in proscuitto! OH BOY! Bake in the oven and viola! YUM

Ohh, I guess I have no excuses now to not look into crocheting! :P Is it easier to learn than knitting? I'll see what sort of things I need, then I'll get myself started! :D

I'll see about trying out the recipe-- that sounds yummy! :)

As far as chicken recipes go, I do much different things with boneless breast than I do with a whole rooster.
I love just plain old breaded chicken with lemon and Parmesan. I also like chicken paprikash (sour cream and paprika), chickens tandoori (yogurt and lots of spices), and we make one called chicken dogsh*t (due to it's color). That one has sautéed garlic, some lemongrass, chile or cayenne, whatever vegetable you want to throw in, cut up chicken, and then you add thin coconut milk and peanut butter, and a dash of fish sauce. Serve over rice.
Most of those sound very Indian or Thai-ish. Yum! Thanks for the suggestions!
