Maine

I wont even tell you how much we spent on extension cords :/ The cords had to run 300 feet so we used 12/3 and we like to be safe and by the books and all so we don't burn down the coop and everyone in it! Soon we will add a heated waterter since I am not fond of smashing ice at 5am. I was looking at heated bucket mods with nipples but I think it will be easier and will keep moisture out of the coop if I just get the galvanized heater base etc and keep it outside.

McMurray Marans are already sold out for 2013! Ack! I wanted some of those chocolate colored eggs!

What? McMurray sold out of Marans already?? I didn't even get a catalog yet. I had decided to avoid shipped hatching eggs and order all pullets from a hatchery this spring, but if places are selling out this quickly I may have to revise that plan.

We are getting 3 or 4 eggs a day here (38 hens) with an occasional big day of 6. I don't light the coop though, so a major slow down is expected.

Well, my son loves the turkeys so I could probably do another even though I HATE to just because he loves them. I definitely would share an order on the Saxonies but I think Muscovies could more easily be bought local-- lots of those around.

Grace... there are plenty of roosters around too. Right now I have a couple to process and one I like a lot but think I might rehome or reluctantly make into food.

Congrats hoppy!

Edited to add that midget whites are tempting... 40# is great if you just cut them in half or quarter them like they do chickens at the butcher. Very nice :) The turkey we processed here looked huge and wasn't.

The Muscovies I do plan on getting locally. I have two females now and just need a drake. It is the Saxonies that are few and far between. It would be so much easier if I liked Pekins as a meat duck.

I'm looking to add links to my website (nefowl.com). I live in Connecticut and want to add some businesses, farms, hatcheries, etc, in Maine to list. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Send me a message, visit the site.

Don't worry, I have a McMurray marans, they don't lay dark eggs.
You want a specialty breeder for dark eggs.

I bought a Marans from Meyer hatchery. Her eggs were sort of dark, but I think she laid maybe 7 eggs in her life! I do like my hatchery Welsummers, but I'm definitely rethinking this hatchery idea....

My poor silly chickens... I opened the gate to the run this afternoon, to see how some free ranging went. Go out tonight to close it all up, and two of my hens are missing! Poor things were huddled up beside the coop, couldn't figure how to get back in the pen. I couldn't help but laugh at that point, but glad they didn't wander off!!

Anyone breed a nice dark-laying Welsummer around here? Or even in NH or MA?
I really want a few dark egg layers, but I find my few Marans to be broody all the time.

i checked the central maine bird fanciers breeder list and have no one for welsummers.

Whoops I lied. They are only sold out till Feb for now it looks like! That is a bummer that they dont lay dark dark eggs. They mention it on their website even! I would love to go local for all my day old chicks with specialty breeders BUT since there is the risk of Myreks on my land I want to make sure to get vaccinated ones though, I have a few who are not vaccinated and they are fine. I don't think I want to risk it.
