Maine

You don't want your extension cord on the ground (thawing/freezing/getting pecked) so you should run it in the air. We run ours out some PVC pipe to keep it high enough up in the air to allow us to walk/drive/plow under it without having to worry about it. We drilled a big hole in a piece of wood also on the fence and ran it through there for extra support. We use O rings and S hooks to keep it attached to the coop, indoors and out, and little to no slack.

Once in the coop I use one of these to attach it to the water base so all the dust, dirt and dander doesn't get in the plug:

Thanks. Saved the Amazon site for cord protector thingy to favorites!!

Wanted to take a minute to thank Hoppy and Pollyc for meeting me this weekend with eggs for the incubator. I am very excited to have such a variety of eggs! You ladies are awesome!

I knowwwww im just being stubborn. We have power in the coop already and I just keep thinking...wellll we made it this far without one... They are expensive and I know there are ways to rig one up so mayyyybe I will give it more thought.

I actually hate breaking the ice in the waterers but I dont mind an excuse to make a visit out to the coop

We didnt want cords running through the air so we got good quality exterior extension cords and they have been fine on the ground so far!

I paid $20 for mine, it's a heated dog water bowl.

got back from the Poultry Congress and you can't even imagine how little stoic me was transformed to an excited and foolish girl over what I saw. The show was big and great, and I mean great and BIG. Wow a billion times.

Birds that made the biggest impressions were the Langshans and Asil/Malay and probably the Favorelles and Polish... AND I SAW ORLOFFS THERE! Its so pompous of me to say this but mine are better than what was being shown and it was easy to know. I overheard a few people who knew the breed let it slip that they weren't great either but who CARES they were there! I got to talk to judges and big breeders and wow wow wow.

Now for the crappy new. BF killed one of my dear pullets while I was gone. He did get teary about it on the phone and berated himself so I didn't have to but it was a real loss. I think my son and I need to stop falling fond of them because they are doomed when we do.

PS VIOLET IVY... it was a Fav so I could really use a replacement :)

While browsing around, I checked Sand Hill Preservation Center, found Mystery assortment of 25 mixed LF straight run for 20$ plus shipping. Sounds like it could be an interesting mix for the person with the room, who was not particular and didn't mind surprises. I'm not interested, but wondering if any one has ordered from them, what is their quality? They seem to have a LOT of types available. More than the typical hatchery. Also appear to be involved in breeding for improved foraging ability as well as other traits of interest for the BYF.

My dog bowl was around $20 also. It lasted 2 and 1/2 winters before it suffered some corrosion and crapped out. Still a bargain. I bought 3 more.

So sorry to hear about your pullet, ashandvine. It is easy to get attached.

And congratulations to Anna on the eggs. You'll have to keep us posted on the hatch.

I've only used Sandhill for sweet potato slips. I think they have decent stuff, but service can be slow. It is just 2 people (2 very busy people).
