Maine

Ash, even my girls, who have thus far been troopers, have stopped laying these last few cold days! It will get better soon!

Those are great photos indeed!

Bucka, I am interested in some brown leghorns! if I end up ordering we can split or if you find a good source let me know.

Lazy Gardener, same deal - if I don't just order some hatching eggs and end up ordering from a hatchery I would like to share an order with someone/ a few people. I am in Cumberland just south of Gray so depending on location keep me in mind. I would ideally like to order for April, maybe a bit earlier.

If I order hatching eggs from an auction in the next month, and have my broody girl on them - if they hatch - should i let them stay in the coop and see how she does as a mama OR should I remove them and bring them into the basement until they feather out? I only have one coop and it is hard to divide the space. If it was warmer I would just build a brooding pen for outside. I know the other older chickens can be rough on little ones but I have also heard of people letting the babies stay with the group without many issues. Opinions?

I have a feeling is that the answer is that I should wait to get hatching eggs till it is warm enough out for a brooding pen. I hope my one girl is still interested in setting by then :)

I'm sure others will be much better with broody advice. I've only had one experience. I had eggs in the incubator and gave 2 to my broody. They both hatched, but one died for some reason.

I did have mother and her eggs separated, but several days after the chick hatched, they escaped their enclosure. I think maybe the chick found a small opening, and the hen had to barge her way out to protect it. A few of the adult hens pecked at the chick, but all appeared well at first. A few days later, the chick had a fairly decent gash on it's chest, so I had to separate again.
I left them together until the hen tired of it, maybe 6 weeks, and then I removed her and gave the chick other chicks his age. He was terrified of them. He is now our rooster, and I like him a lot because he is afraid of people. If I pick up a hen and they squawk, he comes running, but backs off as soon as he sees me. After having roosters that attack me, I think he is perfect!

I like the look of the awkward stage silkies, clover run! I would love to get Brabanters or some kind of crested breed, but I don't want to deal with other birds pecking at them.

Lazy gardener, I'm not opposed to a group order, but it would be somewhat difficult to coordinate. The delivery location is not a big deal to me, as I will likely drive an hour and a half to pick up birds at Longhorn's. I can combine pick up with a trip to Trader Joe's, Micucci's, and the oriental market, so it doesn't seem like a waste of driving.
I'm going to call local stores here too, but I don't think they get birds until spring arrives. Longhorn's first pick up is March 22, provided I order in the next few weeks. My hatch birds will be 3 weeks old by then, and I've combined those age groups before without much issue.

McMurray has rosecomb brown leghorns, which would be nice, but I only want about 5 birds. Longhorn orders from Cackle. I'm tempted to try a Welsummer or two, but I don't know about the quality. My Welsummers from Meyer Hatchery were nice. The surprise egg assortment I ordered will likely not include Welsummers, as she said they were not laying right now.

My other option was to get Exchequer leghorn hatching eggs, but I hate the idea of all those leghorn roosters. How meaty can they be? Seems like they would not be worth growing out.
When would your deadline be for placing the order? I'm really wanting to set eggs for my chosen breeds, but, so far have not had luck finding the eggs. Local gals are on strike with this cold weather. Murray Mc has most of the breeds I'm interested in, I only want 6 birds. (If I hatch, will set more than that with the hopes that my first hatch will yield at least something.) Have you ordered Meyer or Cackle birds before??? I've read the reviews and have reservations but no first hand experience. I hate to commit to an order before mid April, because I'm sure that hatching eggs will be more plentiful at least by March, and then I won't need the hatchery order!!

Got my first Welsummer egg!

And I'm pretty sure I got my first Dorking egg too!

Aren't they pretty!? I love all the speckles and spots. Dorkings are white and still relatively small. Maybe they were just waiting for a warmer room. Be sure you worm everyone and maybe treat for anything else you worry about just because its a good habit. I know you are excited about eggs but I think its a good habit to build especially after the issues you had recently. This way you will be sure of everyone you keep.

Holy toledo! I think my chickens are thanking me for the added hay and treats, cause I am FINALLY getting eggs!!! And it looks like just about everyone is laying!!! We have gotten 4-5 eggs for the last 3 days, and for a week before that I was getting 2-3. Considering I only have 7 hens at the moment, I think they are doing pretty well. Such good girls!

Clover Run--All beautiful chicks!! Love the awkward Silkies! They remind me of middle school boys!

MustardTiger--there is a good thread on Broody Hens on BYC that I've been reading. Lots of good info! My plan is to keep my broody in the coop but setup a backup pen in the garage just in case I need it.

I have to say I am really proud of my girls! 9 eggs from laying flock - 3 from silkies and 2 from bantam cochins - I was not expecting anything in this cold - COLD - weather!
