Maine

I use both. I pay $5 a bale for shavings. The best ones come from Haskell Lumber in Lincoln. Awesome shavings, darker in color than the canadian stuff, no sawdust, and last at least twice as long. I dont lnow wby but, they are awesome. They make them right there, and said they have spent some time tweaking it to get the right consistancy. I love that :)
Hay is cheaper for me, we get ours for 3.50 a bale. I put one bale in the run and some of that in my nest boxes. The shavings go on the floor of the maine part of the coop. It gets mixed together and works well that way. The hay I change about once a week or so. They spend most of their time out there and the Favs roost out there now, plus the ducks and the waterer mess. I havent had to change the shavings for a month. But I have drop boards (best thing I ever did!)
We hatched one little showgirl this weekend! The cutest thing I have ever seen! We named it Spice. It was the only one of 7 eggs to hatch, thanks to the usps. Is there anybody anywhere near me that has day old chicks? I will be in Bangor too.

guess it depends on the size of your coop. Mine is kind of oddly sized, I think its 4x6. If I am doing a full on cleaning and pulling EVERYTHING out, I will use a whole bag of shavings between the floor and the nest boxes etc. I have used hay I guess a couple of times in the past to help during a particularly wet spell etc, and I have to say I find it so much easier to clean up shavings. They hay I always felt I had no choice but to haul everything out every time. The shavings are much easier to sift through (useful when using the deep litter method).

Edited to say, there it is, no need to rewrite thank goodness...and since I made a second post for no reason, I thought I would make it worth while..

I am in Poland! Just found this thread, so excited to chat with some locals!! For the record, I use and have always used shavings and love it. My chickens seem to be able to nest right down in them for the really cold nights when the roost just ain't cutting it :)

I will have some later this week if you're looking for a good home for him or her. I won't be selling these chicks until later, sorry.
She isn't going anywhere thats for sure! When I candled and only saw 2 developing I put a couple of my new Fav eggs in. One was fertile and is going to hatch by Wednesday, if all goes well we will be all set, but I thought I would check with people anyway. Thanks for responding :)

I'm in Limington! Anyone near me? I saw someone was in Cornish back on the first page and the I saw how many pages there were. Exciting to see so much chatter in Maine! I'm still doing my research (hubby is finally showing some interest in building a coop for me) so I'll be keeping my eye on this thread for sure!
