My eggs arent due to hatch until a week from today, so I can't really help you out Violet.

Ash and Widget- The thing that has always attracted me to guineas is their overall silliness. Every time I see them they just make me laugh! I love it! But I think I have decided to wait for now since I dont think I will have the facilities to keep them contained for a 6+week period while they figure out where home is. We want to add some call ducks and a few turkeys to the group this year, so I think that will be where my focus goes for this year and I will revisit the guinea idea another year.

I am pushing for the addition of a hoop house to house meaties and turkeys this spring. I have loved what looking at what everyone else has and the wheels in my head are turning. I think we are going to try the colored ranger meat birds this year. I like what I am reading about them and really like the idea of a more active, healthy bird at the end.

I'm in Limington! Anyone near me? I saw someone was in Cornish back on the first page and the I saw how many pages there were. Exciting to see so much chatter in Maine! I'm still doing my research (hubby is finally showing some interest in building a coop for me) so I'll be keeping my eye on this thread for sure!

SO, where are all of you people getting shavings that are cheaper than hay?? I get a bale for between 3-5 dollars depending on where I go, and the bags of shavings are like....12 dollars? and they don't go as far as a hay bale. I must be missing something???

I have two buff orpingtons, two barred rocks, three black australorps, one salmon faverolle and a golden comet. All pullets who are all on strike right now. At least as far as egg laying goes. There are also ten ducks of various breeds who are also on strike. Not sure what is in my brain to pick but you are welcome to it.

I am in Poland! Just found this thread, so excited to chat with some locals!! For the record, I use and have always used shavings and love it. My chickens seem to be able to nest right down in them for the really cold nights when the roost just ain't cutting it

Aww I'm sorry to hear about the strike! Lovely birds! I'm considering the Wyandotte & Orpington breeds. I love barred rocks....it was love at first sight! They're probably the ones who hooked me. How long have you had chickens? Did you buy them locally? How do the ducks and chickens get along?

Welcome, Dita Von Cluck! I just joined a while ago, as you can see and learning alot. Right now, I have 3 Barred Rocks and am thinking about getting a few more, in the spring. I'm also thinking about the Wyandotte, but really like my Barred Rock girls. They are so friendly and 2 of them have been giving me an egg/day since November. One of them hasn't started laying, yet-not quite sure what's up with her.
