Maine

out of our 10 chicks one of them seems to be haveing leg problems shes got a crooked toe on one foot and the other leg seems to turn on her when shes walking im hopeing that the one that turns on her straightens out for her because its the one bird my wife named and she has fallen for her she seems to know her name and when we go to the brooder she acts like she wants to be picked up and held unlike the rest they try to avoid getting picked up at first but as soon as we do pick them up they clam down we got the chicks as day old on may 3rd so they are pretty young still but im thinking its about time for them to go to there coop we have been putting them in there pen durring the day time now wife is just a little worried yet about it she wants to give them another week or so inside at night

shes roughly 12 weeks old now. i've been keeping a good eye on her for the last few days. she eats and drinks normal. she just hobbles on 1 leg and she doesn't seem happy about it. i feel bad because she can't keep up with the rest of the flock. the flock moves around a lot and she tries to follow them but can't keep the pace. she can't even scratch in the sand. unfortunately she doesnt show any signs of getting better and its been 5 days.

I have a blue orp roo that needs a home. He is really nice, but is picking up an attitude due to an oegb roo being in the pen. The oegb is not very nice to me but since he is tiny and I need him for a project he stays for now. I hatched the orp from Imogene, he has imported english blood in him, not sure of the percent. I recently acquired some 100% English birds and only have so much room for these because they are so big. It will only take a little work for him to be manageable, we haven't held him much but when we do he is fine. He is very protective of his girls, probably the best I have but like I said, room is an issue. I would be willing to sell 2 pullets(large percent english blood, not the 100%) to the same person for a reasonable rate after I pick mine from the large amount I have in a few months .He has a nice broad chest and would probably do well at 4H, just needs a little handling first. I DO NOT want him to get eaten, he is HUGE! Make an offer.....he hatched last year so I am told he is not done growing. To give you an idea he is much bigger than the russian orloff, turkens and ameraucana hens that are with him

here is a pic of Rex (kids called him dino chicken because of his size)

I guess it's just up to how you think her life is. When I was a teen I had a guinea hen that got caught in a leg hold trap and broke it's leg. My dad and I put a splint on it and it hopped around like that for 4 weeks. When we took the splint off the leg fell off. Our one-legged guinea lived for another three years after that. It seemed happy enough. Actually outlived it's peers because it stayed closer to the house and the local fox wouldn't come that close I guess.

I think if I were you I'd try to isolate the bird for a while to force it to rest. Feed it extra treats and baby it. If her leg doesn't get better and she is still struggling to follow the others instead of staying close to the house and you think she is in pain/miserable then cull her.

Sorry. They can be so heartbreaking!

I agree -- if you cann't heal her then put her to rest or let nature take it's course ( a fox or hawk will eventually get her if she cann't move quick enough ) ~~~ Tammy

I probably wont be able to make it to the swap in Wilton, but I will be at whenever the next one is! I am getting 2 guinea pigs to sell, 1 khaki campbell duckling, 1 Mallard duckling, 3 americauna pullets, 4 layer hens, and possibly 2 runner ducklings!

We put a splint on her leg today to see if that helps. I'm going to give her another week or two and see how she does. She is eating and drinking plenty. I took advantage of her being away from the flock and gave her some treats. So either in a week or two she'll be healed and better or she'll be on the BBQ (I have a great beer can chicken recipe).

The wife wants to expand our flock. I was hoping to make it to the Sanford TSC chicken swap but I can't make it. I'll make the swap on the 25th though. I'm interested in Rhode island or New Hampshire Reds, Barred Rocks, Hamburgs and Black Copper Marans. Pullets only. If anyone knows a place to get any of these within an hour or so of the Berwicks (southern part of Maine on the NH border) please let me know. I also have a Brahma rooster up for grabs if anyone is interested, he is 12-13 weeks old.
