Hello my fellow Mainer's! I hope you don't mind me hanging out in your thread? I was born in Bath and lived in Maine all my life, until moving to Virgina 13 yrs ago with my husband and our two daughters. My family still lives in Maine, and I come back home as often as I can. I love and miss Maine.

In August, I received my flock of six layers from a friend's brother. Turnedout that one was a rooster. I'm really enjoying raising my flock.

I can't wait for tomorrow morning. I think it's fun and exciting to see the deep snow drifts and walking around. It always looks so clean and it's nice to see new animal tracks.

Im with you! Was so excited to peek out the windows this morning!
Tried to let my dog out this morning...good thing shes a big dog. I dont know what people with small dogs are doing!

I went out at 8 pm, 1 am and again at 5 to clean off the horses' shelter and shovel off the back deck. First time wasn't bad. Only about 4 inches. At 1 the snow had drifted up against the front door but was only about three inches. The way out to the horses I had to make my way though knee deep snow. also had to go along the sides of the shelter to knock snow off that way since I wasn't getting anywhere from the insde. It is a portable garage so normally I can just knock on the roof to move the snow. At that point I was going through drifts above my knees. The back deck had maybe six inches on it so it didn't take long to clean it. At five I had to get through snow well over my knees to get to the horses. Along the sides of the shelter is was up to my waist. The back deck had anywhere from a foot to two feet of snow on it. This was only four hours after the first time I cleaned it. This morning the deck looks pretty good. The dogs were able to go out and do what they needed to do. I have yet to venture out the front door. Looks like a foot or so of drifted snow on the porch. Snow around the goat and chicken fence is well over two feet deep from what I can tell. At least where my truck is parked it looks like less snow but there is still about 150 ft between the front door and the truck where I need to remove snow.

I plan on getting the paths out to the animals done this morning and at least half the driveway. I'll worry about the rest tomorrow. No plans to go anywhere and no desire to overdo it either.

I can not get to the coop this morning, can't get off the porch. I want to know who left the turning fork on the porch and took the shovel....can't shovel much snow with the fork. where is that darn shovel anyway????

Welcome, April!

Wow, southern Maine is really bearing the brunt of this storm! We read that Portland is at 30 inches and still snowing. Here, we have about 9 inches so far. It's still coming down. Like everyone else, we have lots of drifting. No sense clearing much until the storm winds down a little. Usually, one of the more time-consuming chores is clearing off the hoop houses and hoop coop, but practically all the snow is blowing off those surfaces.

I am running around doing any chores that require electricity, just in case. It is cold enough that I'll have to worry about chicken water freezing if we do lose power, but I suppose I could always melt snow on the grill.

Good luck to all who have serious amounts of snow to move! I'm glad it is light powder.

I had to shovel the snow blower out. It was buried. After one hour of work I have the bottom of the driveway cleared and a path out to the goats and chickens. No idea how the chickens are doing yet. Still have to shovel in front of their pen and get the door open. The goats are in their shed looking out. I did make one pass up the driveway before the blower ran out of gas. I decided to come in and warm up before I go out again. On the plus side my truck has hardly any snow on it. The wind took care of that. I figure I will have everything cleaned up by the time the next storm hits on Monday.

This is storm is no joke! I went out to the chickens this am to defrost the water and make sure they were okay. I brought them some veggie treats too. Looks like snow flew in one of the cracks near the roost cause one girl had some icy feathers on her back I put her under my arm and defrosted her. poor thing. I plugged the crack. I was out there for a while and husband must have thought I got lost so he came looking for me hah! The snow was up to my waist in some spots! The wind is really vicious right now and the power is flickering on and off. Thank goodness for a big woodstove I can cook on if need be!

Thanks! It is about 40° right now with the sun shining bright. I wish I had some snow, although not feet of snow.

Wow! 30" in Portland!! Incredible!! But not unbelievable. I remember the wicked winter weather in Maine. Wish I had a few inches of snow here for my daughter's and I to play in.
