this was in my backyard!! thankfully no where near my coop.
and he better not be staying long either.
or he won't be staying at all!
We had one trot right through town for a few months this winter. Pretty but not fun when it's in your back yard. Don't let your dogs out because depending on how many of the ones you DON"T see you might not get your dog back!

They are pretty, but CREEPY!! My brother just posted a picture of one on FB. He works nights and took the picture early one morning on his way home. It looked like it was on a golf course in Ellsworth-far, far away from my coop.

They are awesome for slugs. Before we got ducks we had these gigantic orange slugs that were so large I could practically ride them. My slug patrol ducks last year kept them in check. They'd slurp them up and then the slug goo would come flying out of their bills when they'd shake their heads after. It was horrifying and delightful at the same time.

Their poo water is also liquid gold for my plants. I ended up with some enormous bulb onions from using their poo water once a week.
I loved having ducks around for the slug patrol... but hubby wasn't too keen on their little nuggets. I've always thought that one could have a successful home business by providing seasonal rental ducks. Kind of like how farmers can rent bee hives during their peak blossom time. Ducks could be provided complete with a little mini tractor... rented on a weekly basis. Of course no one in their right mind would trust their animals to someone who wasn't willing to commit to the long term process... but fun to think about.

Wow. I didn't expect this much in the way of support. Huh. Thank you so much all.
Also, I was thinking that now that eggs are coming from most of my/our birds we could talk again about that egg party. I know a lot of us aren't that 'social' but I think we could make it work. Are folks still interested?

Beautiful animal! Scary to know it was in your backyard!

You're right about the rest of the pack! We heard of a pack attacking & killing a Lab in it's own backyard in Pittson a few months ago.

I have new pics!!

Chicks are now 4 weeks old. They love to be outside! They certainly listen when the roo gives the warning call!

This is Chipmunk.

Chipmunk is awesome! Did you say she is an EE?

I also think it would be fun to meet people, but eggs right now are limited to Olive eggers. The lavender Ameraucanas appear to still be on winter break. Finally both Basques are starting to lay, but I won't have extras until after I collect for my next hatch, which I'm thinking I'll set around March 22.

Maybe my hatch will be postponed, due to lack of lavenders, or perhaps I'll just move forward without them. I'm starting to wonder if they're ever going to lay again.
