Maine

Hi Everyone,

We're hoping to add a turkey to two to the back yard flock of ducks, geese, and chickens. I contacted the extension about black head. They can't specifically say they have had reports in my area but they still don't advise raising them on the ground/free ranging.

Anyone in York County or the North Berwick area raising turkeys with chickens? Thanks!

Just joining from Downeast. 4 Black Star Sex Links, 4 leghorns, 1 Bantam (rooster I hope), and 5 cornish rocks. Coop building this weekend to prepare for the big move.

When do you all put your birds out? All 14 are in the brooder and getting along fine. I was thinking early April? Thoughts?

Also, I forgot to mention I have some duck eggs coming up for sale. Penciled Runners. Holderreads Stock. I'll be checking fertility soon but I have a 2:1 ratio. These ducks are nice and straight, tall, and thin. $15 per dozen/extras. I prefer pick up but I'm looking into shipping. Seems like it would be $16 for a dozen. PM for details. Thanks.

Welcome Kristen! Runners are funny to see. I love the black and chocolate.

The new Orloff cockerel is here!

He isn't as nice as the first guy (gosh, I still lament him. He was great!) but he is here and hopefully little Orloffs will be running around here in the next couple months. Take what I can get for now and work with it as best I can.

Does anyone do greenhouse stuff as well? We are starting to get into the homesteading concept, attempting to fight back against the rising cost of feeding our family. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I am building the coop this weekend, including the greenhouse half. Any thoughts?

How old are they? It's still pretty chilly in April. You'll want to make sure everyone is feathered out. As soon as they are fully feathered they can go outside and will be able to keep themselves warm. I can never remember when that is.... 4/5 weeks ish I think.

I really enjoyed the hatching photos and stories from a few pages back. I mentioned to DH about building an incubator and he told me first things first ie getting an established coop and flock. That's not a no! ;-) Hmmm maybe next year. I know my daughters would love that!
