Maine

Looking to thin our flock. Have some established layers and some young chicks. PM for more info.

You could also bring to the swap Saturday (Wilton TSC) - I have had people looking for established layers at the last two.

We were NPIP certified at the Farmington Fair Ground last year. No adult birds brought into flock since. Only bought chicks from TSC. Not really familiar on all the ins and outs of NPIP as to how long certification is good for. We have 2 2 year old bantam cochins (pair hen gold laced and roo partridge). 6 white Leghorn chicks 5 weeks old, 2 barred rock/x chicks 5 weeks old from our own hatching. A Phoenix looking hen about a year old loayng. An Orloff hen about a year old laying. 2 EE hens one lays blue the other olive.

I also recommend Al's Quackery and the Lewiston TCS has quite a few ducklings.

If your broody rolls an egg out its no good. She will run out early on and its normal. Just keep other birds from laying in there with her. I made that mistake and we had staggered hatching. Confusing for mom. The eggs can be cold and be fine/fertile.

I need to remember to bring my seedlings in off the porch when I let the chickens out to free-range. Luckily, I discovered one snacking on my lettuce before permanent damage was done!

Hey guys! I haven't posted in a long time. Fail. And I'll probably still be pretty inactive. I just started a farm apprenticeship a couple weeks ago, so I've been worked pretty ragged, and my internet time is extremely limited. Still, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Farm life is FANTASTIC. I'm itching to get back into it (I'm home for a day for a doctor's appointment)-- it was more weird than relaxing to have a day without responsibilities. We've been focusing a lot on getting seeds planted, and that doesn't even count the transplants we'll do! I spent some of the time at a friend's place where she raises chickens and angora rabbits, so at least I still got some of that farmy smell! Anyway, the farm I'm on has a ton of animals: horses, a pony, sheep, oxen, chickens, quail, two turkeys, and a duck. And we haven't even gotten meat animals yet! If anyone's in Belgrade, swing by Winterberry Farm for a visit. :)

The only problem is, I'm itching more than ever for my own animals... grrr! So how are you all doing?!

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Thanks for the info! I am excited but really overwhelmed. I looked on craigslist last night. The coops/sheds were either something that looked so old and rickety that I doubt it could really be moved or they were new expensive coops. Nice looking ones though. I am going to really concentrate on looking all over the place this week. Maybe Uncle Henrys too. I am hoping for an insulated one so I dont have to run power down to it. I will bring water a few times a day. Our land is so rocky i think it would be very difficult to bury a power line out to it.

MistyMae, Don't give up hope of finding a coop! We found ours on Craigslist...it came with everything but chickens. You could also put a Wanted ad on Craigslist. I put out the word to friends when I first started looking. I came up with an old dog house & a borrowed 10x10 dog kennel. I had fully intended to convert the doghouse over the winter then we found the coop on Craigslist. Good Luck!

Just brought back a batch of chicks from April King in NH - such great quality!  I have a few avail for sale - can't keep them all!  I have Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, Black Copper and Birchen Marans and OliveEggers.  Let me know if interested - always nice to have some new bloodlines avail locally - :woot
NPIP Certified.

Do you have the ad I saw in UncleHenrys? In Wilton?

I am thinking about trying my hand at hatching. I've seen posts about humidity etc- it does look a bit scary... any insights would be great! I have been looking into incubators etc, they do look a bit pricey.
