Thanks for the kind words about the painting.

Grace, I am so trying to convince my husband to have us foster dogs. So far it's a no go but I am working him down!

It can be hard work, but it is SO rewarding! What are his concerns? This puppy is foster #10. It can be hard to part with them sometimes, but if we adopted them all, we wouldn't be able to keep helping the rest. We've done a variety of breeds and ages, rescues will usually do their best to make sure they aren't giving you an unsuitable dog for your household.

Gracejr, there are black and blue Faverolles in the US, but they are exceedingly rare. There is the common salmon color, which is actually black salmon - there are blue and splash salmon patterns as well, but again exceedingly rare. My husband and I are working on B/B/S Faverolles as a project, but still in the VERY early stages (three black half-orpington chicks and a pair of splash cochins with eggs in the incubator sort of early stages). So far as im aware, Favs are the only breed of any useful size with small combs, beards, and feathered feet. Henry in VT has a cock with a particularly tiny comb that im interested in getting some eggs from if I can, to breed down the comb size in my own flock. Id be happy to share some eggs or chicks once my b/b/s Faverolles project is further off the ground if you like.

Oh nifty! I bet those are gorgeous! Once you get up and running let me know, I may be interested in getting a few for sure. I started out with chickens just for food, but I'm debating whether working towards a heavy bird with feathered leg, beard, and small comb might be worthwhile. My rooster now won't work (blue english orp), but his son would be a good start I think - blue orp/brahma mix with feathered legs and smallish comb. Have a light brahma and blue cochin for feathered legs, and a few americauna hens that would bring beards to the table. I've got one girl that is either an EE or Fav mix, she has an amazing beard, and fav-ish coloring, but only 4 toes.

This is cute! Is there a particular rescue you foster for? I just signed up to be a perspective puppy phone interviewer for the rescue where we got our super sweet lab/husky mix.

I foster through Lucky Pup Rescue. The women who run it are great to work with, and do a good job of matching up dogs with appropriate foster homes. Plus, the majority of the dogs they rescue are transported up from the south where they would most likely otherwise be euthanized.

So far this day is going well. On the plus side the turkey poults are all doing well. Everyone seems to know how to eat and drink. The tetra tints that went outside yesterday are all still present and accounted for in the brooder coop. The negative side is I had to go out and catch two mischievous horses at 630 this morning. They had managed to get out through the back of their new run-in. They managed to undo the zipper on one side of the back door/flap. Fixed that with baling twine so they can't repeat the escape. At least I hope they can't :).Now I am at the laundromat and the washing machine I used decided to leak all over the floor.

What naughty girls! Hope they don't make any more escapes! Ugh on the washer, but at least it was there and not a leak at home?

Boys actually. The one girl stayed put. So far they are still in. And yes it was nice that the leak wasn't at home. Hopefully at some point I will be able to use my own washer again. A bit of a septic issue makes that impossible right now.

Oh man do I sympathize! We just had to replace our whole system last month. We'd been putting it off for a few years, but it got to a point we couldn't ignore it anymore. Especially with a new baby in the house. :/

I confess that I don't like dogs, but that is a really nice painting, mustard tiger!

Glad I put mine away when you visited. She's a doll but loud.

So I need a minute. I have to rant to the only people who might understand. Might. It drives me CRAZY when people say they are breeding AmerIcaunas or that they just went to the store and bought Araucanas. I know some of this is the fault of the hatchery but the feed stores support it and then there are the people who call themselves 'breeders' of these! Shut the front door and stop spreading misinformation just to make a buck!

Clearly education matters to me. Its a big piece of wanting to work with some of the breeds I have here. Misinformation especially at the literal and figurative expense of a person/bird bothers me.

How DO you spell it anyway? I've always typed americauna, but have no idea which is correct. I have both Ams and EEs here, makes for fun times! lol That assuming I'm using the correct definition for EE's anyway. For that matter, what would I call my chicks that are an am/orp cross? They have beards, peacombs, and I'm assuming would lay green eggs (hens both lay blue). Would they be EE's, or x/x cross?

I wish I could but I'm going to be out of town that weekend! You should see him now, He has been putting on Weight since I brought him home. I'm pretty sure its the feed. I should be at some of the fall shows though!

I hear you but unfortunately many of the feed store employees are lucky if they know anything about chickens at all let alone the various breeds. So what they know, right or wrong, gets passed along to the customers who in many cases also don't know much. The whole Easter Egger issue seems to be the most noticeable one. Granted some people know the difference and don't care that they are misleading others but I think most people just don't know that there is a difference. I for one have five EE. I know they are EE and would never sell any offspring as anything but EE.

What annoys me are all the designer dog breeds that people snap up for hundreds to thousands of dollars. They are just expensive mutts whose lineage might not be the best mix. I know people seem to think Labradoodles are the perfect dog but one does not always get the typical Lab temperament with the poodle non-shedding coat. Sometimes it is the other way around and Standard Poodles are not always warm cuddly love bugs. Plus the offspring can also inherit all the genetic defects of both breeds. Yet people will still hand over big money to the 'breeders' thinking they are getting the perfect dog.

Guess it comes down to 'Caveat emptor'. Or the opposite thought of 'A fool and his money are soon parted'.
