Someone new is laying, and I can't figure out who it is! Tiny little speckled brown egg.

Possible culprits:
Silkie
2 Easter Eggers
1 either EE or olive egger


Size wise, I'd lean towards the silkie, but the color isn't even close, is it? It seems all the other pullets were still laying much bigger than this for their first eggs (sexlinks, brahma). What do you think?

Does your EE/olive egger have a single comb?

you won't feel better until you worm them and since you are not getting many eggs, now would be a great time.

I thought chalaza was just the two little things on the ends that holds the yolk in place? This was all through the yolk, in hte middle of it too.

Here are photos. I had originally purchased 4, but one turned out to be a cockerel. Actually, I think it may have been you I got them from? Maybe? Came up with Kim earlier this year? Or am I thinking of someone else? I just can't remember which one was the maybe olive. But thinking back, I'm guessing that would have been the barred rock/egger cross?

Hey all, Not to hijack the worming talk but I wanted to post some pics of the dough stuff ive done. I dont have many pics just a few from the last year or so:




and here is today's project. Lino cut xmas cards. This has become a tradition but boy is it time consuming and occasionally infuriating. The cup is full of coffee spiked with Remy to help me survive it


Salt dough can be a pain. Ash what was the issue?

For worming, what do I need, where do I get it, and how do I do it?

If its just round worms Start with wazine 30ml or 1oz per gallon then dose again 10 days later, don't eat the eggs for 14 days after the last dose. If you have other worms you'll need something broad spectrum, like Valbazen [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]1/2 cc for standards 1/4cc for bantams. Repeat 10 days later[/FONT]

everything looks great! I was semi crafty today- made a garland with popcorn, cranberries and the few pinecones I could find in the frozen snow-leaves.... I'm making a "test batch" of white chocolate/baileys truffles right now...

Hi gracejr, I'm a newbie but I have a friend who has had chickens for many years. She uses pumpkin seeds to naturally worm her flock of 20 with good results. Hope this is helpful.

Oh!Hi! Well, I thought I could probably help you, now I KNOW I can! They are beautiful BTW! It is Tigerlily laying that egg. She is a EE/Marans, and her mom is the EE, who was also an EE/Marans. There is alot of marans in that mix. I suppose it is possible Bee, my Barred EE that is the dad, and she ended up with four recessive brown egg genes. I asked about the straight comb because I have noticed with all my EE and olive egger mixes all the pea combed birds lay the blue or olive eggs and the straight lay brown or Speckled Brown. Well, all of them that I have, and have heard back from owners about. As to the size, and contents, that will improve, pullet eggs can be weird.

JOh, and that isn't what wormy eggs look like in pictures I have seen. I have no firsthand experience with that though. I believe you need to have a real infestation in order to have it happen though. I give my chickens DE in their feed, and in their wallows. I also have used Ivermectin pour on for cattle in the fall/winter, and though I hate to use pesticides, it is very effective, and I have no problems with parisites. Maybe because of the combination. I learned a lot about worms when I had goats. Using two methods of wormers ensures you kill all species of worm, and aside from the obvious benefit of being rid of all the worms, it helps prevent resistance in the worms themselves. You dont want worms surviving, thats how they build resistance. Also, I believe wazine is one of the wormers that many worms have developed a resistance to, and it is essentially useless. Safeguard is another useless one. The benefit of DE is that the worms cannot develop a resistance to it at all. There is dosage info for chickens on the red lake DE website. I use the DE in the warm months, and in the fall I use Ivermectin, it is one of the pesticides that is still effective. Plus it works on lice and mites and worms. I haven't had to use the Iver more than once a year since I started doing it like this. The trick is to use two different types of wormers with whatever you choose to use, I would go that route.
