Hrm thanks for the reminder about Paris farmers union. I think I may just see if I can order through them in Portland.
I wonder if I can get Chanteclers from them...the Canadian in me wants some! :D

If you want real good Chanties then you should talk to this guy in NH, James Verrill. I will try to find his information if you are interested. He knows a lot about them too so he is a good conversation. Used to be a Mainer.

Just wanted to share a pic of my roo, known as White Boy here. He's the one i have been scrambling to find a few nice cochin hens for. Hes a nice, big boy with a fantastic personality and temperment. And i like to think he is rather nice looking too. :) poor guy cant win against the frostbite this year, no matter what i coat him in. How do you thibk he would look in a nice crochetted cap that ties under his wattles?

Does anyone around here have German New Hampshires? I have been intrigued by them ever since someone said my mutt looks like one. I bought this mutt as a chick from someone who said it hatched from a blue Amercauna egg, but it clearly wasn't an Ameraucana. Apparently, the breeder had an accidental cross.

Anyway, I am fond of this mutt, "Brownie", because she is very productive, almost like a leghorn. I can't post photos on my IPad, but her photo is on the olive egger thread, post #4896. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/131131/the-olive-egger-thread/4890#post_10058943

Maybe she's not even related to a German NH, but it made me want one!

Your Brownie looks like my olive eggers. Mine are wheaten Marans Roo over a easter egger hen I have. Their eggs are that exact color. Their mom lays blue eggs. Where did you get her?

Does anyone know of a store in central Maine where you can order a few birds of a particular breed? I still want white eggs, and I thought I could order 3 leghorns, and maybe a couple of NH's from Longhorn. I like going to Portland, but it seems silly to drive all that way for the birds. I just don't know of another place that takes specific small orders like that.

Every spring Aubuchon in Waterville orders spring chicks. Not sure what their min is. Also Knights Farm Supply in Disgusta on Rt 3 does as well. Again, not sure of their min.

Both places are very friendly.

I've been to the Paris Farmers Union in Farmington, not too far from here. I called Agway last year, but it may have been too early, as the clerk did not know what breeds I could get. I forgot about Aubuchon, but it would be easy to stop in there and ask.

I was browsing the Cackle site and saw they have Austra-whites, an Australorp/white leghorn cross. It supposedly is a calmer bird with a little more heft and white to off-white eggs. I had never heard of them, but it seems like a good idea. I may try to track some down.

MustardTiger, I have 2 buff Chanteclers, and while they are pretty birds, mine have broken all records for broodiness!

Your rooster is beautiful, annabanana! My Basque rooster has quite a bit of frostbite too.

Violetblueivy, I got Brownie at "chickenstock" last summer. The woman who organized it had promised me some wheaten Ameraucanas from her daughter's hatch, but the hatch turned out to be almost entirely roosters, so she had none to sell. Brownie hatched out of one of those wheaten Ameraucana eggs. I was told the hatching eggs came from a breeder with lots of different breeds, so I don't know what the cross was.

I'm really looking forward to hatching this spring! I'll probably wait until March or early April. Even though the days are only a couple minutes longer, the chickens seem to have noticed. My worst day, a few weeks ago, was one egg (from 36 hens of varying ages). We'd been plugging along with daily totals of 5,4,3,4,3,5, etc., but two days ago we suddenly got 8 eggs, and today we had 6! Very exciting.

I'm looking for: Dominique, Ameraucana, Australorpe eggs in a 30-45 minute driving radius of Bangor. Have talked to several of you who have been most helpful, (Ashandvine, will you have Am eggs available?) I want to nail down some eggs of these breeds to set during the week of Feb 17. If you have any of these breeds in your flocks and have eggs to sell, or know someone else who does, please give me a yell.

Also, there's a notice up at Bangor TSC that they plan a chicken swap second Sat of every month starting in April.
