Is the chick with brains exposed still with us?

I understand about small holes acting like straws for the snow. I found snow in all kinds of places in the coops. I only shoveled a little by the coops. We decided to wait until tomorrow to do the real clearing, in hopes that the wind dies down by then.

Not many eggs today. I brought them a treat to entice them to lay tomorrow.

Scary moment Hoppy. Living alone make me extra careful when I am doing things. No one would find me for days or longer if something happened.

My poor birds were trapped. Half rode out the storm in the kennel at the front of the pen. They were easy to dig out. The rest decided the hoop house part of the pen was ideal. In some ways it was. Not much snow in there. But in front of that and all the way to the door of the pen was filled with snow all the way to the top. I managed to make a somewhat passable path and created an opening for them to get out. The goats had a nice snow free spot in front of their shed. The shed did have about 4 inches of snow inside though. Trinket, the Nigerian Dwarf couldn't make it to the front of their pen even with the Nubian leading the way. I went in with food and water and the snow was up to my waist. Now they are content and munching away on their suppers in the shed.

Driveway is almost done. Okay maybe 50% done. I can get in and out of it and have paths to all the animals but still have quite a bit to clean up. Tomorrow. And I have to replace the mail box. Or find a way to reinstall it. The box and post are fine just no longer attached to each other.

Yes, brains is still with us.

All my coops had snow drifts inside. But everyone is fine. I have snow almost up to my butt.

Thanks Nell! They are growing fast! My is a smooth Sizzle. My hopes of Spring have been dashed as I shoveled snow off the roof of the pen and then shoveled as much as I could out of the pen.

I'm getting a new coop this spring too. Plus were getting a 10x10x6 dog run that we'll cover. I'm going to use a 5 gallon covered bucket with chicken nipples for my waterer. Ive seen that it works real well. I'm sure I'll have to use something different in the winter months. I saw that amazon sells the nipples.

I've toyed with plans to collect water from coop roof with a gutter, and feed it into a bucket water filtration system, then to a bucket with nipples. But it wouldn't work with my current plan to build with Cattle panels. It'd be great with a standard roof on a standard coop. My son took this filtration system to Guatemala. It is supposed to be good to turn non potable water into potable, even gets rid of the bad bacteria.

Does anyone have chickens that actually enjoy laying in the snow? My chantecler seem to do this often. One of my young roos "snow bathes" whenever we get fresh snow

Oh my goodness! I am so glad to hear you say that you have chickens that lay down in the snow! I have a BR who like to likes to lay down on the cold ground outside. This week, I lost one of my BRs, so I got worried that I might have another sick chicken. That's so good to hear that it's just something that some chickens like to do-I'm so relieved!!

Hello my fellow Mainer's! I hope you don't mind me hanging out in your thread? I was born in Bath and lived in Maine all my life, until moving to Virgina 13 yrs ago with my husband and our two daughters. My family still lives in Maine, and I come back home as often as I can. I love and miss Maine.

In August, I received my flock of six layers from a friend's brother. Turnedout that one was a rooster. I'm really enjoying raising my flock.

well that was not good, I went out to the coop- had to shovel a short but high drift to get inside, then go around back and shovel more, hands got really cold, so headed back to the house and just as I got inside I got so dizzy I thought I was going to pass out. thankfully the kids got me to the couch and warmed up. that would have been bad if it happened when I in the chicken run, they would not have found me or at least looked for me for a while.

So glad you are okay, hoppy! Do you think it was a combination of the cold & the shoveling?

Hi LazyG, I've been thinking of collecting water as well. Is this filtration system something you & your son created? Would be interested in hearing about it.

I had a nice long sleep last night 12 hours, feeling better this morning but I'm skipping the shoveling and working out today, groceries are the only thing I HAVE to do today, other then that, laying low.
and I added a link in my siggy where the new swaps page will be. it will just be a list of the swaps and dates and then a link to the page for that swap. nothing is on the page yet except the basic layout.
once dates start rolling in, I will start filling it up.
