Thank you SO much for this admission.  I do believe it was a bad year for mites and lice and ticks because of the mild winter.  I have to say at least something good comes of these horrible cold days we have had.  I will never treat with dust again.  Waste of time.  The Ivermectin is fine at first but what I needed to know was that I should A) trust myself to identify these things when buying from breeders and B) that I should be checking and treated regularly either way.  I have managed to save a few birds that were very thin but ... the orloff cock has died.  :hit   I was so proud of him and excited to breed them.  Its only a chicken.  I know I know, but it was a really good cock and they are hard to find (no jokes here please).  I selected him carefully.  What is worse I have to go back to the woman who gave him to me and admit this happened.  She had him for two years and gave him to me so I could work with this breed.  I feel so badly.

Hey, I still get upset when any of mine die. I am soooo sorry he died. :hugs Don't give up on them. Could you get another roo or some hatching eggs?

I had never dealt with mites until I got a chicken from a breeder this past fall and I got super lucky and the dust worked quickly for me. Luckily I found it after less than a day and I treated everyone and everywhere. I wonder if the colder temps have anything to do with it? I used practically the whole can. Now if your talking about the lice on my 3 daughters heads that's another story!! My oldest got it from t-ball and it took nearly 6 months to get rid of it!! All three of my girls and myself got it TWICE!!!! We will be buying our own t-ball helmet for this reason!

I am sorry for your loss though I lost a really nice Marans cockerel this winter because of the cold and I am still upset over it.

I went to with the family to visit my inlaws in Ohio, and had a friend take care of my flock for me while I was gone. About half of my flock died in the week i was gone. Needles to say, I won't be leaving my flock again anytime soon.

So sorry about your Orloff, ashandvine.

Is this snow ever going to stop? It was originally forecast to be minor, 2-5 inches. We have 8 inches here already and it is still coming down. Too bad I go back to work tomorrow so I won't be able to get out and enjoy it.
It is good I have to work though, because I have become a candling fiend. I just can't leave those eggs alone. The good news is, I think I saw movement in 15 now, as opposed to 9. It is so hard to see what is going on in the darker eggs.

Anyone in the Houlton/Littleton maybe even Monticello Area who wants to get NPIP certified? Scott Demoranville is going to come on Sunday May 19(tentatively sp?) for me to get certified would like to split the bill.

Well, Russian Orloffs are quite rare. It was a real stroke of luck to get this guy local AND have him be so great. I have asked the only other person in Maine/NH/VT who I know has them if she would meet with me and share but I don't think she has any to share. She keeps her flock small. I could wait another year and hatch out shipped eggs IF this incubator ever gets going. Very close now but that's another year to hatch and raise and choose. I am a little impatient when it comes to this breed because they are my fun breed. I like the four breeds I have here but the Orloffs are just because I love them, they need it, are rare etc. Thank you for your compassion. I too got a few birds from breeders this year that had bugs and was disappointed to have to deal with it from sources I felt should have known better.

If these turkeys ever decide they are going to lay eggs we are going to try hatching out/raising the Midget Whites.

I wonder if I just picked breeds that were difficult or if they all are and I just haven't put in the years like others have to make it seem easier.

I am wishing deeply she will not be upset and will let me take the second cockerel that she offered. I plan to wait till weather gets a little warmer and just put off my breeding till later in the year. They aren't for sale or anything so its fine to wait, just very disappointing. These are the birds that are just for secret joy and the breed.
I was so ashamed to be struggling with the mites. I felt I was doing my diligence but it happens so fast!
My Ams take forever to get going. What's worse is I just did the math on the age of my new cockerel and he won't be ... working, till any day now. Hopefully his crooning and Hoppy's music will get things moving down the egg ducts.

Ashandvn, So Sorry to hear about your Orloff!!

It really bothers me when people say, "It's only a fill in the blank". Well, it wasn't just a....it was an animal that you've/I've cared for. Please don't belittle my feelings for that animal. I felt terrible when I found mites on my roo. I used Frontline on him & the girls. I've been checking but having seen any more. I'm so paranoid about it now.

My husband teases me all the time about putting in a stereo system for the coop. So it made me laugh when hoppy suggested a little Barry White for your hens!

Hi W2ABM,
Did you just powder your birds with DE or Sevin Dust?

I've heard this about headlice. Two of my friends told me that if I ever needed them to help clean up after headlice to call them because they were exhausted when their kids had them. I also used to work in a school so I do know how long it takes to get rid of them sometimes.
