Maine

I had several of the pheremone-attractant traps around the orchard last year, and dumped them into the chicken run frequently with no ill effects other than a feeding frenzy stampede! I will definitely be doing the same thing this year.
Glad to hear this echosrevenge! I get tons of japanese beetles every year. They usually strip my front flower garden.

I just had a hawk attempt to have a meal in my yard....All I saw was the rooster chasing it away- I went out and did a quick head count and everyone is here- no feathers around, and they all seem un touched. I'll tell you what though, they are all talking about it now...very loudly!
Oh no, Mainechick!! I am glad to hear everyone is okay!! I haven't started free ranging yet but worry about that too.

Hey guys! Wnted to introduce myself. Im in canaan maine and I am new to the chicken world we just got our flock of buff orpington chickens (6) they are straight run so if anyone is interested in a buff orpington rooster let me know we might (most likely will) have one (im thinking three).

Black Soldier Fly, perhaps?
Yeah, mealworms, less gross out factor Lazy G!

Yeah, that's what they are, they look super easy to grow, pure protein bundles. They are reported to have zero disease vector ability, are cultured from compostable junk, pretty self contained, and in more southern climates, all you have to do is set up the culture container and the native population takes over. The larvae (they look like big skinny black potato bug larvae) climb out of the culture bucket and fall into a collection cup, all you have to do is empty the cup into the girls pen, and keep putting old produce in the bucket. The adult fly has no mouth parts.

My son named this chick "Fuzzy Feet," and I'm wondering if anyone has seen this characteristic on an Araucana, before. I purchased it as an Araucana, but could this mean it has some other breed mixed in? It's the loudest chick, too. I don't mind if it isn't a full-blooded Araucana (and from what I've read on this forum the Aubuchon chicks usually aren't true Araucanas) but was just curious.

Ooooh little fuzzies. What type?
I picked up 2 BRs and 2 Araucanas for myself and 2 Araucanas are going to Sallina Garda, today, if we don't get too much snow. Otherwise, they are quite cozy here for a little while and are getting PLENTY of attention from my boys on this snowday.

He's showing them his Hess tractor, right now.

Aren't they fun?! As I'm sitting here, I'm listening to mine chirping and scratching around in their brooder in the other room. They are so cute to watch, as they mimic the adult chickens!

Gave babies some chopped sprouted wheat this morning, and as usual, the Doms are the pack leaders for trying new experiences. The older chicks are 3 times bigger, and complete wusses about trying new foods. I can't sing the praises enough (so far) about the personalities of these little Doms!

Is he preparing them for life in a CHICKEN TRACTOR???

It's hard to get excited about snow at this point, even with the day off!

I'm pretty sure I have a hen with sour crop. She was drinking a ton of water, and then threw up a ton of water. I got her to eat a tiny bit of yogurt and bread with olive oil. I have never seen sour crop before, but after doing some reading, I plan to pick up some monistat and try that. I'm working into the evening the next 2 nights, so hopefully she'll be okay until I can treat her. Of course, it is one of the lavenders....
