Maine

That is one cute chick. Chewbacca is a great name.

Sorry about the poults :/ frustrating.

I have to work on the 21st. bummer.

Gotta love working weekends. Actually normally I don't mind until it gets in the way of plans with normal people who don't work on weekends.

chickens are loving this sunshine but I am quite tired of the wind. I feel like I never left Wyoming now!

The eggs are hatching! So far, I have my very first Dominique, and if I am right about the head spot, it's a beautiful little girl.

Congrats on the babies!!

Yeah... I sew now. I don't sew traditional things. I'm currently working on a(nother) straitjacket.
I burst out laughing when I read this!!!

Turkeys officially suck to try to raise by yourself, as in not with a broody momma turkey. I have one poult so far and it is ... pathetic. Not in a good way. Its legs are all over, I think something happened in the egg too because I saw a hemmorhage (?) in there. Its umbilical is not closed up like it should be but dry like there is poo stuck on it. It still hasn't got its legs under it or walking. I have two chicks in there that are about the same age and they were supposed to help it learn to eat and drink. It just flops around and seems like a fish out of water. This momma turkey better hurry up and hatch her own cuz I am not good at this at all. On another note: the geese have laid an egg which is great but ... not. Now he is very protective. Even as a 'cobra bird' (what SO calls them) they are still pretty good. Their pen is slowly getting finished. It will be so nice to have them out of the barn and onto grass.

And here is one of the fluffiest chicks I have ever seen. Even pics don't do it justice. I saw it and wanted to call it chewbacca.

Sorry to hear about your turkey! Hopefully the tall glass method Hoppy suggested will do the trick. Chewbacca is adorable!!

Ash, that is one crazy adorable fluffy chick! Love the name. So sorry about the poults, hopefully hopp's trick will work.

Scg, what do you do with the jackets?

Kinsey, congrats!

Hoppy, you must post a photo, that duckling sounds too cute!

Going to attempt candling eggs tonight, fingers crossed!! Anyone have a favorite link on dry incubation methods? Basically you just don't add water at all until lockdown, is that right? What are the pros/cons vs regular methods?

I had a problem with my hatches until I started doing the dry incubation method. Now, I am having wonderful results!
I am aware they don't eat for two days. I did my homework. I stopped with the humidity until they were pipping too but FTR turkeys NEED the humidity. The membrane is much thicker and more tough. I have the sparkly water and the tinfoil feed in there as well as two chick mentors but this little thing just isn't making it. Sucks. I only have a few more eggs to try then its up to momma to get in gear making and hatching. I will be grateful for that.

Well, she is making this one for me of course because after all these birds and the turkey failure I need one.

LOL on the Cinco de Mayo Hatch Thread last year we were a bit nuts... so we all picked out virtual straitjackets for ourselves.

After that hatch ended I got involved in The Old Folk's Home with many of the same people from the CdM hatch. SJ's came up again. A girl that I'm going to the Utah canyons with in about 3 weeks said she wanted one with "puppydogs, unicorns, butterflies and glitter."

And I thought to myself: "I sew now. I can do this." Unfortunately I couldn't find glitter strapping so I substituted rainbow strapping.

So I made her one without her knowing (as a joke) and mailed it to her since I have her address. It was a hit when it was revealed. I just did it as a funny joke but it took off and someone else is paying me to make her one... why not.

Here's my final product for the first one I made... the second is still in the early stages since it's not winter and I have a lot more chores now:

It's fully functional and doesn't have any "escape hatches."

It was really, really fun to make and I found myself giggling while sewing it at times. The one I'm making now I'm not having as much fun with because it's not (mostly) a joke and is made for a paying customer. I'm worried she won't like it... the first was for comic relief only and I didn't care if my stitches weren't perfect.

Whew. Didn't have internet for a couple days and it took some time to catch up on here.

Still not sure if I can make the 21st. I'm not real comfortable in groups thanks to my Asperger's. And two of my dogs have to come (staying in the car of course). About the only thing I would have to offer right now is plenty of horse manure compost. I could fill up the back of the truck and people could take what they want.

Turkey eggs can be a bit frustrating to hatch. I've tried three times with no luck. That's why I prefer getting poults. Of course the one breed I want isn't easy to find.

I was at TSC in Scarborough today. Went to get the portable garage in a box. Not my first choice but I was given one week to replace the horses' shelter before the state would start to fine me. The old one is still standing and the horses use it but it isn't acceptable since it is sagging. The note that was left on my door said that since the ground was now unfrozen I now had to get the new shelter. Not frozen? I still have ice and snow in the yard. And the ground that isn't covered with snow or ice is still frozen solid about 2 inches under the surface.

I would argue but don't have the energy to fight with stupid. So instead of building a more solid structure I am putting the portable one together. Right now I have the framework partially done. I will try and finish that tomorrow and if things go well I will get the cover put on and secured. Nothing like putting one of these things together with just one person. Takes a bit more than the two hours the instructions say it should.

Of course TSC had some fuzzy butts for sale. And they were on sale to boot. Buy 3 get 3 free. I ended up with six Tetra Tint straight run chicks. They had already been marked down to $.99 ea and with the sale I got them for $.50 ea. I would guess they are around two to three weeks old so just past the really cute stage. Looks like I may have four pullets and two roos. The Pekin ducks were also on sale. They were down to $1.79 ea so they would be $.90 ea with the buy 3 get 3 free sale. I didn't pick any up since I really don't need any but if someone is interested I will be in that area tomorrow and could get some to bring on the 21st. (See that is one way to make me have to go

).

And if anyone needs to renew their driver's license this year I highly recommend going to AAA to do it. No lines. Pleasant employees. And they are open on Saturdays. As long as you don't have to change anything on the license AAA can do it. Only drawback was that someone was booking a Disney vacation while I was there. I would have been extremely jealous but they were going to stay at the All Start Movie Resort. If it had been the Wilderness Lodge then I would have really been depressed.

Perhaps your Strait Jackets would be useful for those who can't resist fuzzy butts marked down at TSC... If you can't access your pocket book... you can't buy, right???

Hello, a friend of mine put 2 chickens in with her original 4 and they attacked one of he new ones and she has a gash from her ribs to her vent, what can she do?
