Maine

And the total for my hatch: 13. 2 Wheaten Marans, 1 Ameraucana, 4 Red Dorking, and 6 Dominique. Not great, but better than nothing. The last chick to hatch I had to help out of its shell. I was hesitant to do this, but after almost 2 days of very little progress, I caved. It looks like it is my only Dorking male, and he is getting better. He was all floppy and his feet were turned all weird, but he is making progress. The 3 Dirking girls surrounded him and seemed to protect him from the other chicks. He is running around and chirping today like the rest of them.

Well, thankfully my little bully Dark Brahma has settled down. They are all back in together. I did put him in his own separate box, for a couple days and he seemed to get lonely. Maybe that helped "knock him down a notch." I'm glad because I really didn't want to have to find him a new home. Seems like he's going to be a really neat looking bird.

Well, the count so far is five live chicks out of 36 eggs that went into lockdown.

thank you, ashandvine, for all of your help and support as I've tried to salvage what I can from this disaster hatch!

The dog will no longer go into the whole corner of the house where the incubators are kept...he's learned his lesson! (for now...next priority is building a stable, secure shelf to keep the incubators out of his reach just in case he's not got the picture quite yet...) The other, older dog has been slinking around for days and I swear we can hear him saying "I dont know this guy, I had nothing to do with this, this is all on him...."

Here's to the next hatch - this was our first and so far only mishap, first time we've lost chicks to anything other than intentional culling, even raising and incubating off grid. 36 Faverolle eggs in the Bator due the 25th, and 48 Khaki Campbell eggs due on May 2 as well. Shouldn't be any shortage of fuzzies around here!

Just realized that I referred to my Dark Brahma as "him." I hope it's not a "him," because I will be looking for a new home for this chick. Pretty sure it's a "her." I also have another chick, who is about 1.5 wks old and she seems to be going through that phase that kids do, when they never stop talking. It's so funny! Even when everyone else is TRYING to sleep, I can still hear this, "chirp, chirp, chirp, chirp..." I'm sure my older girls are NOT impressed. But she cracks me up!

Are your favs LF? I LOVE favs and they are hard for me to find around central Maine for some reason... I prefer bantam but am open to LF if that's all I can get :)

Come to the May bird who on the Windsor Fair Grounds. There are Bantam Favs there-- were last year anyway. A few of us have LF Favs here: Echo, Violet and me. Keesmom in Mass has great ones and then hammack or something in VT has them too. Check out the Fav thread. Those folks are SO nice.

Echo... the public thanks wasn't necessary :) But you are welcome and you didn't need it really.

Daffodils are poking out at my house!

EDITED TO ADD a BIG OMG-- The Seb egg in the bator has pipped and its peeping and trilling in there!
I couldn't throw all the eggs out after that temp spike. I just couldn't do it right away and now I am so glad I didn't. Its very unlikely than anything else survived but duck and geese are amazingly hardy.

What a lucky save.... if it makes it

Huge congratulations.

I'm thinking boy just by what you said.

I know what you mean, hoppy. It might have a little to do with the fact that this chick got more of a generic name, "Fuzzy Feet" and the rest of them got girl names. But also with the way this chick picks on all the others. I never noticed this last year and all the chicks ended up being female. I also thought I might not have noticed because they were down in our basement the whole time, while this year the chicks are in our main bathroom. So, I see alot of them. I like it, though, because they get alot of attention and handling (by even my husband who PRETENDS he doesn't like them).
