Ugh sick with a spring cold. So frustrating! I hate using my vacation time on sick days!!
Just a warning; this post has little to do with chickens...

I am having an issue with my brassica seedlings. One leaf seems to start shriveling up on each plant. They seem to be fine in every other way - no discoloration, no wilting or falling over...Anyone have any idea what this is about? The light above them is about 6-8 inches away from them. and they are in a room that is usually about 65-70 degrees during the day. I dont *think* I am over-watering them either.

The other day we had someone come out and rip off 2500 sq feet of grass to make room for the (largeeeee) garden. Last night we put in the 10 orchard trees. I got some free garden fencing and stakes on CL and made some deer cages and I hope they are enough to keep them off the little trees. Our deer are pretty timid.

Now I have a pile about 10 ft around and 6ft high of nice clean fill if anyone here needs it...only hitch is you'd have to access it from a side road with a small ditch in the way. The guys got a back hoe up the ditch so I suppose someone could get a vehicle up there too.

Here is the logo I made for our mini farm:

I know it's a little silly but I am pretty happy with it :) I wanted it to have a sketchy, handmade look to it. That being said, if anyone needs a logo, banner or any other graphic work I would be happy to do it for barter or money. I rarely use my illustration background anymore and I miss it!
I love the logo!! I try brainstorm what I might call my someday farm, but have yet to come up with anything good :)

The leaves that are shriveling...are they the first leaves? or "true" leaves? It could possibly be too warm? this is the only thing I can think of, I guess it depends on what exactly you have planted, but broccoli and cabbage sometimes struggle in heat..

Other women make themselves feel better with a new pair of shoes, or a pocket book. I have a feeling that most of the gals on this site would be happier with a new garden tool or a load of manure... or an other chicken!

Hahahaha too true! Although, I did get my self a new pair of shoes the other day too. They're waterproof shoes from TSC, and they are for cleaning the coop, so do they still count?

They are a perfect hybrid shoe! Both tool and fashion with some chicken thrown in. Love it!

Mustard- Do you raise hounds? I like the logo too. How do you pronounce it?

Widget- thanks. After the whole turkey failure I was feeling pretty low, so to then have the bator spike like that.... talk about belly dragging in the mud! This little goslings is sweet!!! I should be all about the two (almost three) chicks in there with it but I can't get over this gosling. Its twitter is very appealing. Speculation is that its a blue Seb. So far 7 of the 8 Pom eggs that were candles seem fertile and there are two more in the goose house. I might be a goose lady after all!

Does anyone know how to start brassica from sprouts? If the sprouts are 'sprouting' then what?

Yeah It is just the seed leaves so far. I think it was a little warm for them in there. I moved them to a sunny but cooler spot. I hope they recover. and if not...ah well Ill plant more!

Ash, thanks. I wish I raised hounds! but I don't. We have a hound and I have always had hounds and I imagine we always will. so, it just seemed like a cute fit for the logo. Like many others here if I did not have SO to keep it in check, it would be a zoo here and I would have a few more dogs. it is prounounced "R & J " my initial and his :)

sprouts...I imagine you could just plant the sprouts in the dirt and they would develope roots. Lots of people sprout seeds in damp paper towel so..it seems similar.

went up to Poland today and picked up my pullets. 6, barred rocks 6, black sexlinks 8 weeks old. also have 8 white leghorns 5 weeks old. my new coop is being built tomorrow. be nice to have chickens again.

I admit I love buying shoes, but they are always practical ones. I've always told DH that I must be missing a piece of the female chromosome. I hate nail polish and jewelry and baby showers and I only started carrying a pocketbook because my sister made one for me.

About planting sprouts, just put them in the dirt, burying the root. I start all my onions in a sprouter, but the peppers and tomatoes get paper towels, and the brassicas go directly in seed flats. I haven't started mine yet, but will hopefully get to it next week while I am on vacation (hooray!).
Whoever had the withered leaf brassicas, what kind of soil are you using? I used to combine seed starter mix with garden soil (to make it cheaper), but I found that certain plants were being wiped out as seedlings due to viruses or bacteria or something in my soil. I use the sterile mix now for most plants.

Congrats on your hatch, ash!

I have a bantam choc orp roo that has decided to get noisy now that there are only a couple of roos left. I got him last year as a young cockeral. He is not aggressive to me or my kids. $25. The roos carry 2 copies of the choc gene so first crossing (to black)would result in choc hens and black(carrying choc)roos.
I am hoping his brother doesn't get noisy after he goes or he will need a new home too...

is this a sexlinked gene?

Kinsey, just for you, there IS a hatchers anonymous

I really think that I should start a "Chickens annonymous" group. My hubby is going to come home and find a whole new flock!

I am such a sucker when it comes to odd colored chickens, and the little voice that's supposed to tell you that it's probably not a good idea to get more, yeah, I don't have one of those. Maybe hubby won't notice 2 new Ameraucanas, an olive egger, another BLRW, 2 Buff Marans, and a tiny baby Partridge Silkie (that is in with this weekends hatchlings). Or the black orpington, blue wyandotte, white wyandotte, and pair of muscovies, either....

I LOVE the apparel and footwear at TSC!! Almost bought a pair of rubber boots there, last fall, but ended up with a discounted pair from LL Bean after returning another item and finding a gift card I forgot about. Otherwise, I definitely would've gotten the ones at TSC!
