Maine

I admit I love buying shoes, but they are always practical ones. I've always told DH that I must be missing a piece of the female chromosome. I hate nail polish and jewelry and baby showers and I only started carrying a pocketbook because my sister made one for me.

About planting sprouts, just put them in the dirt, burying the root. I start all my onions in a sprouter, but the peppers and tomatoes get paper towels, and the brassicas go directly in seed flats. I haven't started mine yet, but will hopefully get to it next week while I am on vacation (hooray!).
Whoever had the withered leaf brassicas, what kind of soil are you using? I used to combine seed starter mix with garden soil (to make it cheaper), but I found that certain plants were being wiped out as seedlings due to viruses or bacteria or something in my soil. I use the sterile mix now for most plants.

Congrats on your hatch, ash!
I use pro mix and nuked it just to be on the safe side.

Since we're on the subject of girly-girl things... any one out there use a broad fork? (No pun intended!) And if so, what brand and size. I'm tempted to buy one. My garden soil is quite friable and sandy loam, not much rock until I get down around 10". Thoughts or comments???

NO broadfork usage here, just a pitchfork, which I love. I did just read and article about broadforks though...maybe in mother earth news? I'll see if I can turn it up....

Has anyone here seen a Nacked Neck that didn't have a naked neck? Are they a specific breed or are they similar in respects to Easter Eggers? Like people just breed anything with the NN gene. I just got my BLRWs today which I have to say this guy is A-W-E-S-O-M-E! I bought 10 BLRW but he sent 20 chicks in all 16 BLRW and 4 blue/splash something or other that he said were NNs that were hatched with no naked neck! He said he sometimes get these so just threw them in for warmth. They are the absolute most sweetest chick I have every had. I have no clue about NNs as I thought they were ugly, but these are adorable! How do they lay number of eggs wise? I took a picture but need to find the cord for it.

On another note I wish I had discovered hatching in egg cartons 2 hatches ago!!! I decided to try it because my hatch rates are so horrible! It is at the begining of my third hatch we are now on day 20(day 20 started at 9 PM tonight) and 1 are hatched and 3 are pipping make that 1 hatched, 2 sitting in their eggs with the tops off like cartoon eggs so not sure if that is actually considered hatched, 2 pipped and 1 zipping

this is crazy rediculous! I know I shouldn't count my chicks before they hatch and all, but WOW the cartons seem to already make a difference. The other hatches wdidn't even pip until after day 22 and only ever 2 hatched at the same time! For my first hatch 25% and my second hatch only 10%! If these were just the AM eggs it would be one thing but it is my 2nd batch of MF Cochins from the same breeder and the first time only 2 of 4 hatched(that developed out of 15) and those piped on day 22 and hatched on day 23. Or maybe I am just getting lucky my Turkeys did hatch 2 days early last weekend

The first hatch I did mess up a little though for one day I made the humidity way too high.

Actually, we are building a new coop this summer. Right now we have the coop, a smaller pen that my hubby named "the love shack" for breeding that fits about 5 or 6, 2 big brooders, and I just bought a small coop for the chicks to grow out in. (that hubby doesn't know about)
Holy Moly...sooo envious!! I think I'm going to need a grow out pen/coop for my 3 week olds that are living in the converted dog crate & pen in the garage. Wish we still had our 2 story barn but alas we had to make way for the garage & attached breezeway. I do like not having to brush snow off my car & bring groceries in without getting wet anymore. Maybe I can convince DH to build me a small tractor cuz they're not going in with the big girls until they can defend themselves.

Ugh sick with a spring cold. So frustrating! I hate using my vacation time on sick days!! Just a warning; this post has little to do with chickens...

I am having an issue with my brassica seedlings. One leaf seems to start shriveling up on each plant. They seem to be fine in every other way - no discoloration, no wilting or falling over...Anyone have any idea what this is about? The light above them is about 6-8 inches away from them. and they are in a room that is usually about 65-70 degrees during the day. I dont *think* I am over-watering them either.

The other day we had someone come out and rip off 2500 sq feet of grass to make room for the (largeeeee) garden. Last night we put in the 10 orchard trees. I got some free garden fencing and stakes on CL and made some deer cages and I hope they are enough to keep them off the little trees. Our deer are pretty timid.

Now I have a pile about 10 ft around and 6ft high of nice clean fill if anyone here needs it...only hitch is you'd have to access it from a side road with a small ditch in the way. The guys got a back hoe up the ditch so I suppose someone could get a vehicle up there too.

Here is the logo I made for our mini farm:

I know it's a little silly but I am pretty happy with it :) I wanted it to have a sketchy, handmade look to it. That being said, if anyone needs a logo, banner or any other graphic work I would be happy to do it for barter or money. I rarely use my illustration background anymore and I miss it!
Hope you feel better MustardTiger! Ahh...April Break when everyone gets a cold then brings it back to school. I remember those days. Love your logo!! You did a great job!!

Other women make themselves feel better with a new pair of shoes, or a pocket book. I have a feeling that most of the gals on this site would be happier with a new garden tool or a load of manure... or an other chicken!
LOL LazyG!! I second that emotion!!

I told DH the other day, "I'm NOT high maintenance! Many years ago, I might have been a little HM but not now!" He agreed and said, "This chicken thing has given me more gift ideas for you. How would you feel if I wrapped up a bale of shavings for Mother's Day?" I said, "I would LOVE it!"

Hahahaha too true! Although, I did get my self a new pair of shoes the other day too. They're waterproof shoes from TSC, and they are for cleaning the coop, so do they still count?

LOL Kinsey!! Sure they count! My Mum & Dad gave me some tall Boggs boots for Christmas--purple with flowers. I did pick them out. My Mum says, "Those are so pretty...you're not going to wear those in the chicken coop, are you?!" Umm yeah Mum...they're mud, snow & rain boots all wrapped up in one!
