Ha! I get the feeling that SCG has some good cicada stories in her past.

Widget, you've got some strange neighbors. Maybe the camera flash scared the horses home.

I got a black fly bite on my eyelid planting the tomatoes yesterday evening. This morning, I look like a prize fighter. Maybe it will intimidate those rambunctious children into behaving!

Bucka, I also got a "nice" bite from a blackfly...on my forehead- my whole forehead, base of nose, and under my eyes is still swollen. I look like I had some bad plastic surgery or something!

Not a cicada and we do get them here. We love them. They will be later in the year. I hatched Praying Mantises here this year-- so cool. I think this is a Brown Fruit Chafer. The larvae do feed on dung, and decaying plant matter but the adults eat rotting fruit, nectar and pollen. I would say this is a good bug :) A picture of its underside/legs could confirm it for me but I am pretty sure.

The Brunswick Swap is not well advertised but I think I am going with a few young birds, Ams, dark layers, maybe a mutt or two. Maybe a couple adults. I cant' make up my mind. I hate carting them around if no one wants them although it is funny to have them in the car peeping away.

Duckie has a sibling. The sibling was not hatched at all but I put the egg in the bator when I put duckie in there to warm up after its rescue. Then the egg pipped and sat and sat and sat. I helped it a bit last night. It was super lethargic so a little sugar water this morning, a long walk in my shirt with us talking to it and its opening its eyes and peeping etc now. Still seems weak but we are trying to help it along.

Hey, Widget, I think your horses need some exercise. wink wink. Let me know.

Well here are the names the Grandkids picked, Pip, Rosa-Bella, Peaches, Fluffy and Betty. Don't know why I waited so long to get hens the little ones love 'em. Now working on getting them comfortable around people and hand feeding treats.

What about just bating it so it heads to your compost or a fruit bag?? I didn't read that they would eat the roots only dead material. That's too bad. I looked them up in my insect id book. I would love to be an entomologist but I am not. I am however a duck rescuer. The new duckling has made it to the point that its trying to stand and walk, is eating voraciously, drinking and preening itself. Phew and Yey. I can't wait for these duck and Java eggs to get here and get out. I know that sounds very non-fan about chicks but I wanted to be done hatching already.

Oh! Turkey momma has four babies! (finally)

I just grew up in an area with a heavy cicada load.

Oh, and my dad just mailed me a bunch of them. Cicada carcasses, that is.

If you think I'm strange, you should meet my family.
