Maine

Normal people drive down the road and enjoy the scenery... Me, I drive down the road, and envy other people's mulch piles. I suffer from mulch envy. My 3 x 6 tractor has gone off to spend the rest of the summer helping a friend with 6 chicklets. Nice that it's getting some use while I'm not needing it.
The other day, husband and I were on our way somewhere, and ended up behind a tractor, hauling manure....of course I said " wow, that is some great looking manure! I wish I had some of that!!"

oh, yeah... the only thing better than seeing a good pile of s*** is having it delivered right to your door... well, maybe not the door, perhaps garden! Harvey Ussery warns about actually having your gardens becoming too high in P and K due to frequent addition of manure, has a whole chapter devoted to manure practices. I don't expect to reach that state any time soon, but it's something to think about. BTW, his book is excellent. Covers a lot of ground.

Hoppy, sorry about your rooster. I understand you have a back up roo? Good planning. I was discussing flock management with my friend who started her first 6 chicks last month. She's thinking along the same lines as me... wait until year 3, then introduce a rooster. Too bad there wasn't a rent-a-rooster program. I've long thought that a rent-a-duck program for slug management would be a money maker! Of course I make these statements with tongue in cheek, knowing that it would be very poor poultry practice due to biosecurity, however, it's an amusing thought.

yes, thankfully I do have a back up rooster. sometimes what I do is when i give away a rooster, make the agreement that if they decide to get rid of him, I have first option. only once have I needed to cash in on that but it's a win win for both of us. of course if they are doing swapping out of of lots of birds, I really have to think how hard I need this bird, sometimes not that badly to take that kind of chance.

Hi everybody! !!! Just found you guys ;)

Am new to chickens here. We started with quails in March. Hatched from eggs. It was our starting point. Now we are sooo excited to venture out. We will be getting a couple of SLW soon!!! Thanks to Mike aka. Hoppy. Right from the beginning have had my heart set on SLW and Buff Orps.

Happy to be a part of this thread and keep learning and sharing!!
