Maine

Lookie at what I found tonight.

I have a pair of ring-necked doves who have been sitting on an egg or two all summer. Problem was that they decided that the main food dish was the perfect nest so the eggs would quickly crack or get kicked out. A few weeks ago I put in an extra dish so the doves could sit all day on an egg without being bothered. I was not expecting anything and did not pay much attention. And the dove sitting on the egg hardly ever got off so I really did not know if there was even an egg in the dish. Well tonight when I fed the birds both of the doves came over to the food dish. This is what was in the nest bowl. A little baby ring neck who from the looks of it hatched a few days ago. One thing about it the babies are quiet. I have yet to hear a peep out of it.

Widget that's adorable.

MEMama, I like your chicken bios. I wouldn't be able to keep up with all the information (too many here), but I do find myself forgetting who was acquired when, and it would be nice to have a written record of that.

I guess I'll be running a semi-retirement home here for a bit. We have an appointment for 9 chickens at the butchers this Saturday (our bachelor pens). Our plan was to get rid of some of the older hens later this fall. One of the roosters dropped dead this summer, so now there are 8. Since we have an appointment for 9, I told DH we could take one of the hens with the roosters. He said, "which one?" So I suggested perhaps the Barred Rock. "Roxy?!!?", he said incredulously. We went through the list. Some are favorites of his, some favorites of mine, and a few are too small to be worth paying to butcher.

After a while, I said that we could probably afford to feed them for the winter. We both know this can't go on indefinitely, but for now, everyone is staying.

Ash, the olive eggers are from different crosses. All the same rooster, but different hens. Maybe I'll try asking on the olive egger thread...

Those of you with turkeys - are they still laying? Mine are and the BR turkeys are going broody on and off. I thought this was late.
Mine are still too young to lay but from what I know of turkeys this is a but late in the season to still be laying.

I did look outside today to see five of the turkeys on the hood of my truck admiring themselves in the windshield. Tried to get a picture but they scattered as soon as I opened the front door. Never a dull moment with them around.

I picked up the most devilish, fiendish, tricky little critter in the poultry world today... four of them to be precise and now I am scared to leave the house for fear I will see or hear them: call ducks. [run screaming] They are not for me but the kids are going to come home and see them and it will be like christmas only without snow. Can't wait. They are so cute! Its trully a crime against judgement and nature to own them.

My front porch seems to be the place to be if you are a turkey. They'll look into the house, and the cats will freak out. It's great.

Are calls seasonal layers? My pekins laid pretty much straight through winter last year with about 6 weeks of a break. I only have one girl this year (darned fox) but she's my oldest girl and a really fantastic layer.

I love call ducks yet I have none right now.

They are just so cute and a nice manageable size.
Too bad they weren't a manageable volume!

sucked in...

Oh no I didn't!. These are being mailed out on Monday. Not mine. Not even petting them. Nope. I will admit that I have been very taken with these Sultans though. They are about as close to those alien 'chickens' you keep [silkies] as I am ever going to get. When I picked up the ducks the guy had silkies and frizzles and I said, no way, not going there lol

You should get a turken frizzle.

I know what I'm getting you for Christmas.
