Widget~ Ha, ha. I hate monkeys too!

MeMama#~ Sorry to read about your losses. Stupid people!

Am I being ridiculous for building another coop for just one bird? I am trying to construct a smaller coop for my favorite bird, BigBird. She is the anti-social (to other chickens, not me) black crested polish. She freaks out with the other birds and today I caught an SLW hen chasing her around. So, I decided to try and construct her own home and run! My construction/carpentry skills are really lacking, so tomorrow morning I am going to get my husband to try and help me. Luckily, I have plenty of extra fencing and scrap wood. I'm using an old door as the top of her coop (BigBird's House).

Oh, when people write DH does that mean dear husband?????

I no longer care for the fryeburg fair :-( 51 weeks a year I live on a quiet rural street in the village. During fair week it's like the Indy 500 as impatient drivers speed through trying to bypass the long lines of traffic. I went out for coffee with a friend this morning. I came back first to see my rehabbed squirrel squished on the road. It was heartbreaking, but it is a constant risk to wild animals. Then I noticed yellow legs in the road on the other side of my driveway. It was my favorite bird (my black maran who laid her first egg yesterday). I'm not sure how she got out, but she was hit with such speed that you could barely tell it was a chicken. I am both sad and angry.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Sorry to hear about your animals, it's too bad. As mentioned above, it's a shame people need to feel that their own individual lives take precedent over safety (especially of the world immediately around them). It's crazy how people can wrap themselves up in their own little world to the point where setting down their precious cell phone to notice a speed limit sign is too much to ask.

Yes, I am making the new coops right next to the old coop. We are also constructing a chicken pavilion. (kind of a giant aviary for chickens, made mainly of fencing) we had one last year but had to disassemble it since we moved the coop. It's great for winter. So, BigBird's House will be right next to the pavilion the old coop will be on the other side. I know, I was thinking the same thing lazy first a coop for BigBird then a time-out coop for bad birds, then a coop for broody birds, then a coop for quarantined birds, etc. LOL! Yes, I do have access to power tools, which I have zero experience with, so tomorrow I begin learning, first lesson impact-driver drill. Today I learned that nails suck, nailing one board to another is a lot more difficult than one would imagine, also hand saws suck, maybe if it were sharper it would have been easier, but a chop-saw (?) would be best. And I have no idea what names go to what tools.

Hand tools S*** Power tools rock! Now, I'll never stand why women with their lesser muscle mass persist in their fear of power tools, and always gravitate to the S***y hand tools. Power tools even out the playing field a bit!! You'll do fine. And I LOVE the chop saw!! Nails s***. Screws rock! But I have a heck of a time driving them any where there's a reach and especially over my head.

Here's what an old(ish?) woman can do with a few power tools. (Although I'll admit I am scared of table saws, I love my chop saw!)
Coop & Run, screen house, table.
BOO YA! X2 on the chop saw and table, though I will use it.

So... apparently things that are 'over night'ed from TX to ME take TWO days. Can you say, "discount please?" Don't call it over night if it isn't. To state the obvious: No birds yet.

I totally "chickened out" when it came to culling my bird. I might have been able to do it if someone stood by my side and helped, but everyone who knew how backed out on me. I just finished listing her as free for pet or meat on craigslist and uncle henrys. I feel like an epic failure because I couldnt bring myself to follow through...
Longbranch Store in Bowdoinham is hosting a humane butchering at home course in Oct. check them out on line.
