Wish I had a video of this but when I went out a few minutes ago to feed evening meals it was like the scene at the end of Homeward Bound when Shadow, the Golden, came over the hill and picked up speed running towards his owner. As soon as I stepped out onto the porch heads popped up from all over the yard. The ducks from the left near the coop, the turkeys from the tall grass closer to the end of the driveway and the chickens from here, there and everywhere. They all started coming towards me slowly at first and then at a dead run. Then, as soon as I had the bucket of food in hand, they all made a beeline for the coop.

Once they were in I was able to get the grain ready for the horses. I had a few minutes while they ate so I decided to look for the egg stash. I have been hearing the egg song in the mornings and knew there had to be eggs somewhere. I found the spot under the giant leaves of whatever the plant is under one of the bedroom windows. Almost thirty eggs. Several were definitely pullet sized. I disposed of the batch and hopefully they will continue to lay there and not pick a new spot.

And yes it is occupied. Blends in with the siding and is only about 2.5 feet above the ground.

Here is a photo of my polish maybe roo. I am really hoping he is a girl. I am leaning towards rooster. At first I thought he/she was a boy because of the head feathers but then I thought girl because no waddles and now boy because of the crowing attempt plus s/he was cock fighting with another roo What do you think?



I have 4 roos! to 11 hens. I already got rid of 4 roos! I want to keep my white crested polish roo, my barred rock roo and now this one. I am definitely getting rid of the rhode island red roo! He's a jerk already. But three roos to 11 hens seems excessive.

Izzybella~ Some chickens are just more laid back than others. I wouldn't worry too much just yet. Maybe she just didn't get a chance to clean her leg or didn't notice it yet.

My poor pyreness. She has a cone of shame to wear if needed but hopefully it wont come to that. So far she has left the area alone.

That would be nice. Just enough to have a white Christmas. After that a couple inches here and there would be fine until Spring.

Cleaned out the coop again then "tried" to whitewash the coop! Used the wrong type of lime and too much water.

Upside is the girls were able to free range most of the day and they have a nice clean coop with fresh bedding. Had 2 bales of pine shavings in the car since yesterday...love that smell!!

Did find 1 worm on the roost Friday a.m.--will worm them again in a few days. Everyone is looking & acting healthy!

My sister the vet came to visit today. Of course, she made a bee line to the chicken run, I invited her in, and after she inspected the premises... she said with a puzzled expression... it doesn't smell bad, and why is there not poop everywhere??? She also noted that my girls were more personable than the chickens that she sees in her travels.

We split wood today. When we took a break for lunch, I put one of my big butter cup squash on the splitter, and brought in the pieces to cook down. My big stew pot would hold only half of that one squash. That half fed 7 of us tonight, and there were 2 quarts left for the freezer. I need to get out and weigh the bounty produced in that one hill. (it was about 4' x 3' and grew all of my squash: butter cup and red kuri.)

I once had a nest like that hanging off my electric meter. I called the electric company and asked what to do about it. They said spray it, and run like h***! I was concerned about a liquid spray around electrical wiring and gadgetry, so suggested that since it was on their equipment, that they could come spray it and then run like h***. After several more verbal exchanges, they did come and remove THEIR nest!
