Agreed Bucka. They won't like that idea. They'll moan and mope all day. I think after reviewing my options, that by the time I'm done playing with cattle panels, chicken wire and plastic, I'll have a winterized space that'll be 8 x 20. Not a lot compared to free range, but not too shabby for a snow free area. It'll be secure from aerial attack, but not predator proof.

Oh yeah! I have one in my garden that's about 25 years old. I painted it with enamel paint, and it's still going strong. You could easily put little runners on one and turn it into a chicken tractor. I can just see it now, P/U some discarded skis, put a platform across one end of the cross bar, a little hardware cloth and plywood, and it'd be good to go! I'm just waiting for the day my 7 y.o. outgrows her swing set. I don't want her to grow up too quickly... she still uses it every day, but....

Yes, Yes, Yes!!! They grow faster than you want them to!! Mine are both in college...can't believe it!!! My daughter called me yesterday to say she definitely has strep throat.

Part of me really wanted to drive 4 hours to take care of her because she sounded so miserable.

I"ll have to check out google earth for new pictures of our place! We've done so much work out here, clearing land. Just last week Hubby knocked down some large Pine Trees to start clearing the orchard spot.

I'll have to check ours. Our old barn was still in it last time I checked. I really miss that thing now!!!

Have any of you ever dealt with fowl/avain pox? I am quite sure this is what I have been dealing with- it started with the rooster and slowly spread through the flock. They had blackish scab/wart looking things on combs, faces or near eyes, which all eventually dried up and went away after a few weeks time. What exactly would cause this? and is it true it won't happen again??

Two more things- My yoga instructor has a 5 year old Maine coon- fixed, indoors, good with dogs- that she is unable to keep. She helped me find a home for my foster kitten over the summer, so I promised I help her find one for hers!

Lastly- MY COFFEE POT BROKE THIS AM! When you get up at 5:30, this is not a good thing. I had to scramble to find the percolator we use for camping, got some done just in time for hubby to walk out the door....

Did it look like this? I thought it was just from a peck but now I'm not so sure.

The lesions were bigger, and raised- they started out small though.

I grew up in Massachusetts and a few years back went on a nostalgia tour. I hadn't really been to our old house in 27 years. My dad moved out of there while I was in college. DH and I parked down the road and walked around the neighborhood, which had changed significantly. I insisted we cut through the "field" (now overgrown with brambles and trees) behind my old house to see what remained of the woods. As we struggled through the brambles and cut through the corner of the backyard, we emerged to find my old rusted childhood swing set frame, still in place! I couldn't believe they never hauled it off, or at least found a use for it. The people who purchased the place were from Winslow, so we swapped states. I was pleased to see they proudly displayed the Maine state flag (blue tarps) over stuff out back!

The Christmas Tree Shop recently had tarps for sale not sure if it's still going on. When I told my sister (also a chicken keeper) she said the same thing, "You can never have too many tarps!"

We had a skunk spray this morning at 5AM. One of the dogs smells "funny" not skunky but like a chemical. Poor DH went into work and the whole row of cubicle dwellers could smell it! Now that's ALL I can smell. I think it's my shoes which were in the breezeway where DH locked the dogs until he could come wake me up. Couldn't sleep last night the last time I saw on the clock was 2AM--DH woke me at 5AM. NOT A GOOD MORNING!! AND I'm allergic to coffee so Mt. Dew here I come!!

I've found the best place to buy tarps is Hamilton Marine. The blue tarps are a little less expensive than the silver, but you can make your own decisions. They have 5 locations from Portland to Jonesport, so maybe not too far away for those near the coast. I looked them up online, hamiltonmarine.com and searched for tarp.
