Maine

One of my EE who has yet to resume laying, though she has been squatting for a while now... keeps climbing in the nest box to cuddle with an egg. What's up with that? She's not broody. Is she trying to take credit where credit is not due? I'm on to her, b/c she's always caught cuddling a brown egg! I guess I shouldn't complain. An egg that is loved, won't freeze!!!

Thank you for the compliments on the eggs. I prefer that no two eggs in the dozen look alike. I know they all taste the same, but I'm fixated on the colors.

I saw the comment about quail eggs and thought, well, yes, quail eggs are pretty, but what could you do with them...... And then a few posts down I find a recipe! It sounds delicious. I don't know anything about quail though. Do they live with chickens, or would they get beat up?

I have quails. Love their cute little eggs. We have done traditional meals with them...omelette, fried eggs, & scrambled. But so want to try that recipe...will mix it up some hot some bacon! !! Lol.

Love getting eggs everyday!!!

Yum cheese! We had ham, egg & cheese sandwiches for dinner tonight. Used my EE eggs. Boy are those shells hard! Store bought eggs--I crack them & have yolk down the side of the bowl instantly. Thankfully I don't have to use those things anymore!!

Chicks are ordered as are seeds from Johnnys. Only the melons got back ordered and my first pick broccoli variety. Wooohoo!

here is what is coming:
silver gray dorkings
barred rocks
silver laced wyandottes (and gold for Jazor!)
Welsummers
Buff Orps
Black Giants
White leghorns

only a couple of each :)

Hi everyone, hope you are warm.
We try to buy our birds local every year. Last year we never got turkeys because everyone sold out of heritage breeds so fast! I was bummed.
If you opt out of hatchery birds, where do you get yours? A swap? Craigslist? Back Yard Chicken forums? We would like to add quail this year and I am determined to have some beautiful heritage turkeys. I know it's early on the game but I was so shocked that I couldn't find any last year, so I'm on the hunt. Early worm catches the bird, right?:cd
That being said, my incubator will be empty soon so if you are in southern Maine, let me know what you have for eggs... We are looking for a few breeds of chickens, turkeys and quail. :)
Thanks for reading

Suzeme - last year I tried Deciccio (sp?) from Johnnys - not much luck with that at all. It was my first year with a garden in maine. This year we are trying Diplomat.

I too will be looking locally for my turkeys...Id like Midget whites! I may order through paris farmers union if I cant get them from a breeder. Widget - does Longhorn order turkeys? do you think I could just order 3 or 4?
