I've got EE roo over EE, RIR, and PBR in the incubator. The PBR should give black sex link pea comb olive egger. Have ordered chicks: Dominique, Rose comb brown Leghorn, and Pioneer (DP meat birds). What was I thinking???

May I ask where you are getting your Dominiques from? I would like to buy some baby chicks or even fertilized eggs.

SanCarlos: I'm getting day olds from Murray McMurray by way of Aubuchon. (they're all sold out for early shipments, but you may be able to pre-order some for a bit later in the season. I've found that if you want anything specific from a hatchery, you'd better order VERY early in the season, even if you don't want ship date until much later.) I hear that Cackle has a good line of Doms. There's a lady in NH who has hatching eggs. I forget what her screen name is, I think it begins with D... If you go to the Dominique thread, and ask, you should be able to get her name. You're not too far from me. I'm in Winterport. My 12 y.o. has gone to Camp Fairhaven for a week for the past 2 summers.

Bucka: Love the potato! I bet they were wondering what kind of egg it was, the way they carefully excavated around it. My girls dug a few potatoes for me last fall. I never would have found them, as I hadn't planted any potatoes there, unless they dug them for me.

I took an egg out to candle for my 7 y.o. tonight. It was fun to see that chick dancing through the eyes of a child.

Finally planting some peppers, tomatoes, and dahlia seeds tonight.

Ash- I had separated the cockerels of the same age as my layers when one was showing signs of being overmated. I then introduced the younger ROs which I believe to be 2 males and 2 females to the pullets. I separated the cocks on 2/27 but surprisingly the pullet eggs are still FERTILE! I've heard of eggs still being fertile 2 weeks after separation but they aren't rabbits...younger ones are 5 months old. I've never seen any hormonal juvenile behavior from them yet and they aren't even as big as the pullets yet. Any thoughts on this? The pullet that was showing the crescent ruffled feather pattern from overmating seems to not be feathering back out but the other pullet seems untouched. So strange.....

Ok, I am ready for warmer weather. It was -8F below zero this morning with -20F below zero windchill. It's almost April and we are still dealing with frigid temps!! I am getting worried, as I have an order of 7 chicks coming from Meyer on April 21. I am praying it will have warmed up by then so they survive the shipping. I made the order in late January, I would have thought the end of April would have been a safe bet for warm enough weather, but now I am worrying!! GO AWAY, WINTER!!!

Are goose eggs good for eating? I've only ever had chicken eggs.

We ate the one he brought in. He broke it on the way in! I heard him on the other side of the door, "NOoo" and then he came in with it. I was making eggs anyway so in it went. No one complained. I have hard they are good for souffles but I never made one of those before.

No more goose eggs today but a nice man and his wife picked up some chicks today. More are coming Wed so it was nice to have the room. I have the Augusta swap on the calendar but its been so darn cold I worry about them. Today's went home in a nice box with a hot potato for warmth on the ride. IDK that I want to have a 'cooler' of heated potatoes on hand but maybe I will need to.

I will pm with you about this. I think I am a little unclear on what you are asking and how you are knowing the pullet eggs are fertile unless you are incubating and then candling at day five to tell. That is the only sure way I know of. It is normal for two weeks of fertility after removing a cock/erel. Not abnormal but as to be expected actually. If your birds are laying and fertile this early that is good in my book. You want a fast maturing bird if you are planning to keep them for long. The less time you spend waiting and feed them the better. This is how folks used to do it. The fastest birds that matured earliest were the ones they wanted to keep around so that they were efficient on farm. Birds do prefer other birds sometimes and some birds are 'easier' than others.
