So sorry Widgett. That is just awful.

I now can't tell my little assisted hatch chick from all of the rest. So I guess all of this year's female BSL chicks will be called Phoenix!

Sad news. The goat that was attacked passed away during the night.

She appeared fine last night but must have had internal injuries.

I'm so sorry Widget. I have a special place in my heart for goats.

I know its in the genes of some breeds of dogs to kill things, but I don't feel that breeds which are bred for this and exhibit these behaviors belong on a farm... with the possible exception of the small ratting terriers. I don't blame the breeds but I do think they shouldn't be on a farm with other animals and then the dog is put in a situation where they can do this I feel sorry for all those involved. I am sorry for the goat and sorry for you Widget. I know that you worked hard to get goats to your house and have taken real care with them. I imagine this puts in an interesting position.

For the past 2 weeks I have been repeatedly finding one egg a day on the floor. It is not always the same kind of bird's egg, either... some days it's a golden comet egg, others a buff orpington. I think the barred rocks are staying in the boxes. Any advice on how to entice them into the boxes again? I have 4 boxes for 6 birds. They only use 3 of the 4. The funny part is that I have a buff orpington who has decided that regardless of whose egg it is she likes to sit on it sometimes. Not sure if it's the beginning of broodiness or what. Pretty funny to watch.

Do you have wooden eggs in the boxes? I have wooden eggs in most boxes, and I find if I move the wooden egg out of a favorite box and into the least favorite, they will change where they lay. I don't know how high your nest boxes are, but when I find eggs on the floor it is often because another hen pushed the egg out. It seems to always be true that the hens will fight over boxes even when there are plenty.
