Have you examined that chick? The dry assisted hatch chick that i had was initially like that. I thought the leg was really deformed, but it was mostly stuck due to dried membrane and being immobile in that position. You might be able to gently assist the leg back into the correct position and do some splinting.

Just what I needed: 2 more chicks! But these were kinda' special because they are the "kids" of a Dark Brahma rooster I gave away to some friends in the country. These guys are Barred Rock/Dark Brahma crosses-really cute! One of them seems to have a single comb and bare legs and the other one has the feathered legs. They both have interesting coloring. They are black, but seem to have little "splinters" of white throughout and white chests. I don't know much about genetics, but maybe someone can explain this combination to me and what I might have with these chicks. I also tried to make some kind of guess with the feather sexing but I read that it only really works with specific breeds. My son and I were thinking of names for this combo and we like "Brahma Rocks."

Dow girl: Some where there's a chart that explains black and red sex link genetics, and the types of combinations that will work. Of course it may depend on if there are any crosses in the parents of the chick in question. Generally, a dark rooster over a barred hen should give you a black sex linked chick. White spot on the top of the head = male. Black head = female. Not sure how the bib fits in. If you google "Sex-linked" you should be able to find the chart. It's a fun read. I do hope you got a couple of pullets!

Wow. Lots of hatching going on. None here though. I still have a determined broody turkey sitting in turkey and duck eggs. Also had a broody duck but her nest was not in the best spot and had to go. She was hidden under some day lilly plants but they are in the new dog pen. Jean Luc found her and almost had duck for lunch today. He also knows where the turkey nest is but that is outside the pen and out of his reach.

As for me it has been a rough week. First I had a rock hit the windshield and put a nice ding in it. Had to get that fixed today. Even though it was about a quarter sized ding they replaced the windshield. Then I called my mechanic to see if he could take a look and see if he could find out why I have been getting a very strong odor of gasoline coming from the truck. Yup. There is a leak somewhere around the tank. Great.

So the truck is really not safe to drive. As in it could catch on fire. Not something I want to experience. He can get it in on Monday and back to me by Tuesday. No problem. I can just rent a car for a couple days. Oh wait. I have no way to get to the airport to pick up a rental. Reached out to family and friends. So far only one responded but that was this morning and I have not heard back to confirm. And I need to reserve the car ASAP to get a good price. Sorry for the vent but It is so frustrating to find out that no one is willing to give up a bit if time to help. And people wonder why I prefer animals over humans.

Thanks LG, it was for the best, she had brutalized one of my hens as well, almost stripped her bare of feathers. Can't have it, and can' be constantly disciplining and refuse to tie a dog up. She will be better off with a field hunter, and everyone will be happy. We cried when the breeder picked her up, but it has been soooooo peaceful now! No regrets, and the hen recovered by the way, and is regrowing her feathers nicely.

You are right, I was wrong about the night guards. I had a big point credit with Amazon, so did only pay about $25 for four. There are sites that sometimes have great sales for as much as half off the standard $20, will keep my eyes open and post here if I run across one. They appear to wok well around the guinea pen, the birds actually seem attracted to them, but it seems to be keeping the mice and rats away, for now...there is always plenty of food left in the A.M.

So my silkie is definitely broody. Won't leave her nest spot even at night. I had seen some lavender orpingtons at a TSC swap recently, if anyone has a few babies I'd be willing to give them to her to raise.

Or is that a foolish idea?

Depends on how long she's been broody. If only a few days she may not accept chicks.
