I couldn't pull it up via the link but will see another way- I was going to say Stay calm, some folks don't know about pasty butt and wonder why their chicks die but since it is on Animal Planet and the comment of the flies and litter it must be a company chicken house or cruelty vid. If I respond to an ad for chickens and conditions are bad I won't support the people's ways by buying from them. Even if you buy everything just to get the chicks/chickens out of those type of conditions it just allows the person to buy more to treat the same way for more money later.

I also had to pull the video up a different way and was very sad when I saw it. I understand that sometimes one or two little ones get pasty butt and if you have them outside that maybe there is one or two flies. But that was sad! I was slightly concerns that this was on Animal Planet. It did give the name of the place as well. I was so very close to commenting about the poor babies but I did not. It's sad that people actually sell chicks this way. I can not imagine that they survive very long.

I just checked the camera and the pasty butt and bedding is fixed but there are so many flies!

At what age can the chicks be moved from the brooder to the coop in this summery weather? When it is 70's at night, it seems like they could manage inside the coop at a young age.

Has anyone else noticed a drop in production the past few days? Wondering if it's the hotter weather...

Could be. My production is variable. 4/5 one day, 2/5 an other. My girls are in their second season, and one of them is not laying at all. Just to be sure, I'll put her in the little tractor for a few days, and if my suspicion is correct, she will be invited to camp with the boys. I hate to b/c she's beautiful, such a nice girl, but she picks feathers at night, and only at night.

I moved mine at 5 weeks old (last week) and took the heat lamp away a few days ago... They've been free ranging for 3 days straight now and have no issues finding their way back to the coop in the evening.

I moved mine out to the coop at 4 weeks and turned off the heat lamp a few days shy of 6 weeks, back in early June. These were our first chicks, so they were the only ones in the coop.

Couple of big drops in production for me recently... once when all the regular broodies dropped out of the egg laying race to sit on golf balls. And then again over the weekend. I thought at first that it had to do with the fact that I let them out of their run way early in the morning and they found other places to lay, but yesterday I had them in most of the day and I still got very few eggs.

Guessing it's the heat.
