Maine

I have lavs, but not breeder quality. Lots of gold leakage on the rooster, and not wonderful feather quality on the hens. If you're just looking for non-show quality birds, I have eggs. They are still pretty. It is a tiny flock, so not tons of eggs here.
Thanks for the offer....an incubator is on my Christmas wish list. I'm hoping my other half will make a non-electric one for me since we have a small solar system running the house that couldn't handle constant draw. I can't wait!

Try Jessica Creighton or Becky Mcvoy. They are both on facebook. Not sure if Jessica is still breeding them or not but I know she was at one point. And Becky has lavs, just not sure if they are Amer. or not :) But they might be able to help even if they don't have what you are looking for!
Thanks I will try them both...you guys are the best!

Their possible molting could be why the egg production is down? Wow I'm glad I asked. Meat protein? I've got tuna which they loved last winter . Let's see how that goes over! Oh and I have some of their favorite white bread for treat today. Tuna sandwich for breakfast. Have a great day everyone.

Liver is great for them. Last year a friend gave me the heart and liver of the deer he killed. I grind up the organ meat and if I have leftover (freezer burned or something) hamburger I mix them together. It makes a more easily doled out mixture. I freeze it in ziplock cups and thaw one every now and then. You can just dump it out for the chickens. I get much pleasure in spooning it out to each hen. I only have five. It tickles me to watch them jump for it.

I'm looking to add two hens to my flock and I've been having difficulty finding some in my area for sale. While I adore chicks, I don't have time to care for babies right now. So I was hoping for a couple 5 mos. up to about a 1 old. Looking for standard sized girls who will lay nice sized eggs. I live in the Westbrook area and don't mind driving a bit of a distance.
A couple of cheap and free ads in Uncle Henry's this week.

the crew left today: It took them 6 days to thoroughly thrash my yard, removing 4 or 5 pulp trucks loaded with hard and soft wood, remove and bury stumps and rocks, grade, add some loam, and triple the amount of useable space I have. Casualties include my huge leaf pile, 2 compost piles, plantings of oregano, lemon balm, and peppermint. The soil has been turned over in a lot of areas resulting in exposed sub-soil. So, I have a lot of work ahead, including cover cropping the back area, seeding the front lawn, need to get a couple of truck loads of compost from the local dump to make a good planting media for my 7 trees. The chickens were totally terrified the first couple of days. Yesterday and today, they were lined up against the fence watching the goings on, and dust bathing while the thrashing was going on all around them. In spite of the upset going on around them, I got 7 eggs today. 4/4 for the old gals, and 3/12 for the new gals. One of the Doms flew the fence this morning, luckily before the work crew showed up. I went out expecting to give a merry old chase to get her back in. She ran up to me, clucking, promptly squatted down, and spread her wings, and stamped her feet, then froze there until I picked her up! YESSS!!! Unfortunately, only the 2 old nest boxes have received the stamp of approval for eggs. I've tried a big dish tub, square cat litter bucket, and most recently a cardboard box. So far, no takers on the new accommodations. I'm off to town tomorrow morning to p/u grass seed and other budget breaking lawn supplies, Will have to see if i can come home with an appropriate sized box. I'm wondering how they'd do with a big tote with 2 access holes? If they all get laying before the new coop is finished, they'll need at least 2 new boxes, or one double.

Oh yeah: My Bocking #4 Comfrey got shipped today. I have 10 crowns plus some root cuttings coming. Will put some in the garden to hold it until next year, and plant some of it in various locations around the yard. Also have 2 elderberry, 2 cherries, 2 Siberian pea shrub, and 1 Apricot to plant. Gonna be a busy girl!

Congrats on the end of the clearing work, LG!

I recently cleaned out a closet and found a crazy cat litter box that my cat refused to use. It is an igloo, with a ramp leading inside. There are no more cats here, so I put it out in one of the coops. It took a while for the first egg to appear in there, but now suddenly ALL the eggs are laid in the igloo. I'm glad to finally get some use out of it!

That's hilarious. I use old covered cat litter boxes in the coop, too, and they're a hit and easy to clean and move if necessary. On the other hand, the cute basket that I put in there for a nest was obviously inhabited by an angry poultergeist because it was avoided by all poultry.

Hey everyone! !!! Sorry to be MIA. Transferred to a new center, closer to home and have been super busy finishing at one center and just finished 2 weeks at the new one. Absolutely love the new center but super crazy busy! !!

We are down to 9 chickens now ;) Will start over with hatching in spring. Our baby chick is now 18wks old. The silkies are 19 wks. But our 1 1/2yr old BO roo won't let them integrate with the older flock. So think maybe our baby chick "teen anger BO" is a roo???

He is a beautiful roo ...free to good home
