From time to time I have seen a kestrel flying above the trees and roosting in the trees around the open lawn. Today the chickens were free ranging and I heard a lot of frightened cries from them. As I made my way down the stairs, a kestrel was on the stone step just outside the storm door. He flew away quickly. It took me awhile to get the chicks rounded up and into their run. They had hidden in the landscaping and would not come out, in fear. Their instinctive reaction for survival was encouraging.
The kestrel is not as large as the roosters, but certainly more fierce. It looks like the chicks' free ranging days are over. I will have to find a way to give them some room, with a cover that keeps out the hawks.
