Nature's drama! We have been trying to trap a really crazy aggressive squirrel since it tried to get in my house a few times and did damage to the inside of my Prius. I think we finally got him yesterday although they all look alike. I think it would have to be a pretty big hawk to carry away one of my chickens but do you think one could attack and kill one on the ground? Geez if its not one thing its another these days!

Hello fellow mainers! I live in portland and i have one golden sexlink hen and one light brown leghorn rooster. I have a small prefabricated coop with the attached run.here are some pictures

Welcome dodochick! You will eventually need more hens, or one less rooster for your flock. A rooster will wear that lone hen bare, eventually. It is good to have at least 6 - 10 hens per cock.

What are you using to catch the squirrel? I had good luck last year with big rat traps, but that was for the smaller flying squirrels. Squirrels and chipmunks... people who have never had to deal with their destructive tendencies don't understand what a nuisance they can be! I remember when I used to think they were cute...

In other rodent news: my dead mouse count is up to 22 for the season! (I use the old fashioned snap traps and have only had one instance where it wasn't a clean kill.) I know I should really find where they are getting in, or get a cat. Two problems with both of those plans - 1) this is an old house... the minute I plug one hole they've got another 2) my greyhound has a very keen prey drive when it comes to felines! Alas, I'm stuck with my traps all over the basement and attic. :)

dodochick92!

Remember there are no stupid questions! I've met some of the nicest people here on the Maine thread & on BYC. Good people! Good advice! They've gone through the trials & tribulations of being a chicken owner with me, cheered me on new additions, calmed my fears when I chicks hatched in the coop in winter, consoled me on my losses and advised me on illness & best practices.
