Maine

Chicks survived their first night camping out. I had to go out and shove them under the heating pad several times. Then, they complained for quite a while. I went out before 6AM to check on them. They were all tucked in, but came out as soon as they heard me b/c their feed dish was low last night. It's fun to watch them pop out of the cave. Reminds me of toast popping out of a toaster that has the spring wound too tight! They had a snack, raced around a bit, then went back inside. I only had to tuck one in. That's the most charming one, and, I'm guessing that it's a roo.

Did some candling in the bator last night. Didn't even need to pick any of them up. They went in 4/14. Excellent little spiders in most of them. A few clears. This batch did not have the vitamin supplementation, and I was able to see inside the shells of the green eggs, while I could not do so with the last batch.

My unruly rooster goes to his new home this evening. I put him in my isolation coop last night and my girls have been SO happy. They've had such a peaceful day and no one was chased away from their breakfast. I had to laugh too as my senior hen stood on top of that little coop and preened herself knowing he was stuck in there and couldn't hurt her.

I gave full disclosure on my reasons for culling him and the guy taking him said if his top rooster can't whip him into shape, he'll be dinner. I'm glad he's at least willing to give him a chance to redeem himself and learn from a wise rooster (who even attacked the previous dominant rooster when he went after the guy's young daughter thus becoming top male).&nbsp

Scott DeMoranville in Bradford of 4Ds Birds and Bees Farm just posted some pictures of Silkie chicks that he's selling. The FB page is Maine Poultry Connection. He's got some great colors and selling them for $6 but I don't if that's too much of a drive for chicks.:)

With warmer weather yall remember the rodents. I have a horizontal 3 apartment deal with a roo in the far left and a momma with (7) 2 week old chicks in the far right apt. The middle apt had a bale of hay with a piece of scrap tin over it. I went to get hay and found a nest with 3 mice running out! Killed one but 2 got away. Right beside my momma and chicks! Today is the 2nd day after I rustled the mouse nest and this morning I discovered it had started a new nest under the waterer in the brood apt!! Makes me so mad that they are so close to momma and chicks so I'll be getting some live box traps. Chicks can't get into them and the BOs love to eat the mice I catch.
