Maine

My rat knockdown was short lived, they've come back with a vengence, living under some hedges between the house and the barn. Much harder to trap now that there outside.

Some have actually made their way into the house crawl space, really can't have that. Lord knows what they're doing to the insulation under the house. Going to try hunting over bait at the ratting hour this after noon. Ordered more glue traps for the crawl space too.

What's really bringing them in is the fermented turkey feed, can't wait till Thanksgiving to be done with that.

I hate to admit this but I had a horrible casualty of the rat traps - a chickadee.

Note to self: the traps are not safe still being set during the daytime in the protecting cage.

Bummer on the chickadee. I wondered if birds would go in the cage, so at least now we know that is a possibility. We only set ours at night (and uncover the poison water at night), but recently, we haven't even bothered. We're at 100% failure rate, and it seems like there are too many to take one at a time.

We did find a dead rat on the compost pile late summer, so someone must have stockpiled the poison (we hadn't put any out in a long time). DH wants to take rat droppings from one group, and put it in the holes of another group (which is far enough away to be another pod, or whatever they call their groups). They are territorial. I doubt it would accomplish anything, but it may be entertaining.

I swear that any visitors to this Maine thread would think that the state is entirely populated by mutant rats!!!! On the theme of collecting rat poop and shuffling it around, perhaps you should empty the cat litter box, or scoop up all your dog poo and dump in in the rat holes. Coyote scat, visit a zoo and get some mountain lion poo. You could become a connoisseur collector of poo specimens, and see if any of them have the desired effect.

I love this group and I don't care what out of state folk think! They have rats, too. I moved here from Baltimore. I've seen the rats.

I was unsuccessful last night, too, and the rat dug a tunnel next to a trap. Sigh.

Hey Mainers!
I have a 2 year old rooster, who is the sweetest guy ever. His name is Mr.Simon. Simon was born with crippled feet so his toes bend upward and over.
His nails need to be cut frequently to stop them from creating sores on the sides of his legs. He cant mount the hens because of this. He can walk fine though, thank goodness.
I sadly cant keep him because I have restrictions on roosters were I live.

Does anyone know of a happy home in Maine where he could go?
Must go to a non kill place, in relative proximity to Portland.

Thanks,
Autumn

Tomorrow, I start my collection of bagged leaves. Folks don't know that they are giving away an incredible bounty in those bagged leaves! Last year, I got 100 bags of leaves. Had to ration them out here and there to make them last all season!!!
