Maine

I have a small tupperware type dish with 2 hand towels in to wick water and provide more surface for evaporation. Spoke to a lady in Norridgewock who said my chances of hatching first eggs from a young hen aren't good.
She's of the opinion the eggs will be to weak to be viable. I am still going to attempt it anyways
So far over 6 days the temp has been constant at 100 degrees.
Did have a drop to 98 for a while and a spike to 102 but those are still in hatching range and wasn't for that long.
Bad thing is if they hatch I am 99% sure the father is Jules. While Jules is a beautiful specimen of a rooster. He is also an A hole.

I hatched a really nice hen from a jerky rooster. Not only was he a jerk, but he had fertility issues. I tried hatching 24 eggs from him on 2 different occasions, and only two eggs were fertile.
The nice hen is still here, but jerk went to the freezer years ago. Good luck with your hatch!

Last night, I was going out to shoo the stragglers into the run so I could shut it up for the night. One of the Colombian Wyandottes was running around. She looked like she was trying to run away from a nest that was stuck to her butt, and she had a blue thing hanging off her leg. So, I decided to investigate. Yep, she was trying her darndest to run away from an unfurled roll of fly paper that was wrapped around one wing, around her butt and up across the other side, with the blue case of it dangling by one leg. There was all manner of hay and debris stuck to the fly paper. She was in a panic. I was not amused. Thank God for fish nets. Such a marvel for catching fly paper shrouded chickens. I caught her, and brought her in so we could perform the fly paper extraction without being swamped with mosquitoes. I opted to cut the fly paper off her. Where there were new pin feathers or short wing feathers involved, I used a bit of baby oil to disolve the glue. I'm sure I'll be able to pick her out in the crowd!

The pullets are 15.5 weeks old. Jack is showing interest in breeding them. I think one of them was singing the egg song earlier today, but I could be mistaken. Combs don't say that they will be laying right away. ? Is Jack just being a jerk, or do most roos start breeding the pullets before they start laying?

pullet eggs have a higher chance of being late deaths, i cant remember why -sorry
he may not pass on his bad behavior, if you can get his eggs to hatch try to not pen them with him so they can't see his behavior and dont pick it up

We have a critter here too. Not sure what it is. This year we saw a deer in the field (we never see them, despite 70 acres of woods). The apple trees have been nibbled.

The garden damage was to the lower leaves of a few brassicas, which seemed more like a rabbit or something. Then we had two brassicas chewed down to a stub, which made us think ground hog. Something also chewed the tops of a handful of carrots.

We set up the game-cam and only saw the neighbor's cat, but there was also no damage that night.

DH bought a spray that repels deer and rabbits and applied it last night. It smells like the juice you get in the bottom of the compost bucket if you accidentally left it on the counter for weeks (apparently it repels humans too).

We're going away soon, so whatever it is will have free range of the garden. We'll see what's left when we return!

Hi all! I was wondering if anybody had a girl or two that needs a new home around Wilton? We're hoping to add a new breed or two to our little backyard flock. I'll consider any girl(s) from 12 weeks to 2 years old. Prefer no buff orpingtons, faverolles, australorps, cochins, or NH/RIRs. It'd be preferable if they weren't super flighty, so we could catch them if needed. Thanks in advance ❤❤❤
