Maine

I got the coop cleaned, did some cleaning in the garden, planted some apple seedlings, garlic, and some day lilies. They are simply tucked into the ground for now, not their final resting place! Stove cleaned out, new fire laid, and just now eating lunch at 3:30. Still feel crappy.

I've been diving on the ground catching chickens. Both flocks have been wormed now, although the 2nd flock will need their 2nd dose. Otherwise, I've been swallowed by school projects.

I'm not looking forward to this snow, but if we get enough I can try out our new ski loop. If you add in the old loop, there's at least 2 miles of nice trails.

I have a friend who is looking to give away almost all of his flock. He has about 11 birds that he is looking to remove: Some EE, and I believe some RIR. I'm not sure what other breeds. The birds have been well cared for. Varying ages. PM me for telephone number.

Better late than never. Today, I spent a good part of the day putting up a ridge pole and green house tarp over an other section of the winter run, and putting plastic around 3 sides of the run. Still have 2 very small sections to cover with plastic to keep the cold winds out.

Yesterday looked like a great day to get out and do some things. I was trapped at work until dark, but noticed it was still above freezing.
Happy Solstice everyone! Brighter days are coming...

Hello Mainers!

I'm located in Lebanon, Maine, right on the border of Southern NH.
This is my first posting, and my first year as a chicken owner/lover and I became a chicken addict in August 2009 when the chicks came home. That's right, I too am addicted. It's really nice to see that there are others like me! I can't tell you how helpful BYC Forum has been for me. It has prepared me for the unknown (unknown to me!) and given me a lot of excellent advice (through other postings). Although I have read a couple of chicken care books, they never prepare you for the unexpected.

I started out small with four RIRs. They are wonderful pets as well as great egglayers! I can count on 3 eggs, sometimes 4 eggs a day from them and they're only 24 weeks old, and have been laying since 20 weeks! I'm so proud of them

Oh, and did I mention one of them lays double yolks at least 3x a week! BIG egg for such a young bird!

My coop is not insulated. I have a heated waterer and keep a 60 Watt bulb on day and night. It's a small coop so the temp. inside is warmer than outside, but not too warm so they stay acclamated to the cold weather. They seem very happy and and it shows with egg production!

I'm so happy to hear there are other Mainers here that think its worth fighting the cold and snow for your chickies !

Thanks again for all the great threads! ~ Kim

Kim,

Hi there neighbor! We are in North Berwick, near the Lebanon line! We have 14 chickens, and do the same with the heat lamp in the winter - so far it has worked out great. I have a few chicken sweaters on the way as well that were knitted by a friend, can't wait to see how the girls feel about those! haha!

Nice to see someone local!
