Maine

Do you hatch your chicks every year? This is my first year with chickens...since last october. I have 3 adult hens that are about 2-3 years old...2-8week old BO and six 2 day old chicks that I bought from TSC...I have read all the post from everybody about hatching chicks...I am thinking I might try it..I really wanted cochins and BO...am I correct in thinking hatching is a way to get what you want? I still have to look into it alot more but it just seems like alot of fun and a great way to raise chicks...

We lost power with the incubator going here. Luckily, we have a generator, although getting it started requires a car jump-start, which involved getting the car stuck sideways in the driveway!

My hens are starting to really pick at each other, which I had been alleviating with a little free-range time, but today they were cooped up and at it again. I've been out there chasing them with blu-kote. I hope they do not kill each other before the weekend is out.

It sure doesn't look like I'll be planting my peas in 19 days!

I'm rebuilding from the fox massacre of last year. So I have some feed store hatchery chicks and some I got in January from a fellow BYC member. And I thought I would try hatching some eggs just for fun. So I ended up with eggs from another BYC member from Georgia. The first hatch was so successful I bought more eggs from her. They are the ones hatching now. I am also planning one hatching out some Welsummer eggs in May that I am getting from a breeder in Maine. At this rate I will be swimming in chickens this summer. And turkeys and ducks.

Good thing we have Chickenstocks. I know I will have to thin out the flock at some point.

Where is there a Welsummer breeder in Maine? I love my three Welsummers, - very pretty eggs. Does anyone know someone in Maine that breeds brahmas? I wish there was a better way to track down more breeders in this area, - I think they are out there, just hard to find.

For the record I'm not trying to keep the breeder's name a secret but she isn't a member here so I don't want to post it. But I will say when I asked here if there were any breeders in Maine another BYC member put me in contact with the breeder. So a thumbs up to Maine BYC people.

It has finally stopped snowing, ended up with about 5 inches on the ground. If it's nice out tomorrow I'll be working on the coop. I have decided to put the nesting boxes on the outside so now I have to cut out a rectangle and cut through 2 wall studs. I should have planned it before but thought there would be enough room with them inside the coop, just to make sure the girls have plenty of room I'll put the nests on the outside.

I've got to build a new coop too! 8'x8'... Fortunately, I have created a roof for my 3'x4' brooder allowing my to move it outside when the chicks are all feathered in. That buys me some time to build the coop and not have the chicks in my basement the entire time. I plan on getting them outside by the end of May. We need some nice weather!!!!!!! Remember last year at this time? Man it was nice...

I have been looking for Welsummers in Maine...no luck. There is a Welsummer thread on BYC and I was able to get the names of a few breeders and also Whitmore Farms. I will probably order from Whitmore, just saving up the dough-$5 for straight run with 25 minimum and $35 for shipping. OUCH! I really only want 4 or 5 of them.

Perhaps sharing an order could help you both out. It seems like quite a large number of chicks at one time.

Any Mid Coast Mainers want to go in on an order from Whitmore? I would be willing to do that. With that said-they are straight run only so you (we) may end up with some roos. If you have PayPal accounts we could PayPal the money to whoever wants to order and split them when they get here. I am willing to do the ordering and I am also willing to drive and pick them up if someone else wants to order. Let me know
