My plans are really gelling for moving to Maine, and in spite of the phenominal (sp?) effort invloved in moving I am getting very excited. NorDx is flying me out on Thursday thru Sunday this week. My interview is Friday, and Saturday I am driving to Brunswick, near Cook's Corner to look at a house for rent. It has 5 bedrooms, and 1 acre. It has a 16 x 22 foot barn. I hope this will all be big enough for my chickies and 4 goats.

Anyone live near here,or know where it is?

I'm going to want to meet all of you, you have all been so helpfull and encouraging to me BYC ROCKS!!!!

I live in Waldoboro (near Owl's Head, camden, rockland) I try to keep the wind out of coops by blocking off openings. I do not insulate in any other way. When I first moved from Massachusetts, I didn't do anything, and some of the chickens got frostbitten feet or combs. Now that they are protected from the wind, they seem fine and I have had no problems.

Know the area fairly well. I worked near Cook's Corner for a bit. And I have a friend who lives in a trailer park just a stones throw from the corner. Not sure what Brunswick's policy is towards livestock.
With the naval air station closing next monthyou might find a great dedl on rents. And in August there is the Maine Highland Games right next door in Topsham.
Commute wise you would have the highway but with gas prices the way they are it might be a bit expensive.

Wow, ParadisePoultry, that sounds exciting! A rental with a barn, some land, and plenty of bedrooms. And near the ocean to boot!

Oh, - I just ready Widget's post about chicken restrictions.

I'm wondering if that might only apply to urban parts of Brunswick. Here in Fairfield, the town is really spread out. I don't know if chickens are allowed "downtown", but where I am is much more rural and chickens abound! Definitely something you'd want to research further.

Good luck!

I was buying though, not selling. (I got a pair of EE's and some Buff Orp, Buff Orp/EE chicks.) I do remember talking to a few sellers though, and if you can describe their birds, I might be able to tell you who they were.
