Get a bantam, even a mixed breed. I have 2 and I'll tell you that I rarely get eggs out of them. I was lucky to get 12 eggs this summer out of the two of them. They spend the majority of their lives in the nesting boxes, glued to eggs and hissing. They started in April and they're still in there, off and on. If they (and their eggs) weren't so cute...

How old are the rest of your chickens? I've also had an EE go broody on me in early June and she still hasn't stopped sitting. She was a year old in April. I finally put her on eggs about a week and a half ago so this nonsense can stop. You may get a broody, yet.

The broodies are actually driving me up a wall. At one point this summer I had 9 nesting boxes with only 2 that were "unoccupied." The rest of my flock were laying eggs everywhere because of the lack of vacancy.

I'm in Argyle...there's enough of us around...maybe we could met up. Old Town or Bangor?

Yes, there was some talk awhile back about getting a swap going at the Bangor TSC, I dont know if anythingncame of it? I guess I can go back and find out. I havent been to a single swap, It is an hour and a half or more to get to the closest ones for me. I just havent been able to swing it. It would be nice to have one here. I would be willing to look into it too.

We have our last chicken swap in Houlton at MPG parking lot the 8th of oct.Would love to see some new faces. We have chickens, turkeys, bunnies, goats, ducks, pheasants and more. Its small as the same peaple come all the time, would really like some new people. It starts at 8am to 12.We have a drawing every hour for a free bag of feed

what a great idea, to have a drawing. maybe we will have to do something like that here. we are also down to our last swaps of the season in central maine and finishing up fair season.

I have a request of you wonderful folks in maine. my husband has recently become interested in growing his own trees. obviously since trees take so long to grow this isn't really for him, but for future generations. he is looking for butternut tree seeds (aka white walnuts)that have fallen to the ground. he will use to to plant seeds and grow new trees. there is a fungus in butternuts that is now killing butternuts throughout much of maine and he hopes to get some that are resistant to the disease. the trees that have this, do not produce seeds.
for more information here is a link, it has lots of pictures of the trees and the seeds so you will know if you have one of these or not.

I am willing to pay you postage if you are not close by and some for your time to collect these if you have them on your property.

My mom's neigbor has walnut trees, but I dont know if they are black walnut or butternut...but I will check next time I am down that way.

great, thank you. if they are butternut, then I need them that have dropped on the ground. right off the tree might not be ripe yet.

That's really neat that I found someone who lives so close.

I have an EE that just hatched out 5 little ones, who is an excellent mother, and another EE who is sitting on eggs for the second time this summer which should be hatching any day. She raised 8 chicks to 6 weeks old and then decided they were ready to go on their own.
