Well my Spring ordering is done. Just got a tentative ship date of April 2 from Cackle Hatchery for my turkeys. I've had good luck with the poultry I've got from them via my local feed store so I figured I would just order direct this year. The fact that they allow one to order less than 15 poults if there are at least 15 total birds in the order is nice. I don't need 15 turkeys and it is easy to add on a few chicks to make up the difference. So I am getting 6 poults (3 Bourbon Red and 3 Royal Palm) with the rest being Cinnamon Queen and Salmon Faverolle chicks. I did okay substitutions if it comes to that since last year the turkeys were delayed.

Add my duck order to that and by the end of April I will have about 50 little ones begging for food. Nothing like dealing with all of them at once. Now I just have to get a second brooder for the ducklings since they are going to be messy, little, cute fuzzy creatures within a day or two of arrival.

Good thing I have a big daylight basement.

On a sort of funny note one of my co-workers was rudely awakened last week by a rooster crowing under his window. So he did what every wonderful neighbor does and called the cops. The cop was not overly amused but told him if the rooster came back he (my co-worker) could kill it. Now I know roosters are loud and can be very annoying but wasting the time of the police is a bit insane. But my co-worker is a soon to be first time father and his girlfriend is terrified of birds so he doesn't want the roo to be hanging around. I did tell him that the rooster is just trying to help get him used to having his sleep interrupted by a crying baby.

And that I would be glad to give his brother the recording of guinea or peafowl just to torture him even more.

Of course my psychotic roo loves to crow at all hours yet I am so used to it that I never really hear it and one of my basement Silkies has figured out he is a roo and has been practicing. Good thing my neighbors have chickens and are far enough away that a crowing rooster is not a problem.

well i set a few eggs in mid december and ive got 6 new baby chicks that hatched out of them and they started hatching out 2 days early on me so need less to say i really wasent expecting them till today it ment i had to get the brooder ready sooner then i thought i did but i think its a good start for the new year more baby chicks

I have baby chicks too, 15 of them that hatched on the 31st. I still have 5 ducklings too, they're about 2 weeks old now. Still trying to sell 2 of them but seems like no one wants ducklings this time of year. Can't imagine why...

1 light sussex (for sale)

2 showgirls (not for sale)
3 EE (for sale)

I was hoping to grow the chicks up and sell them at the first swap as almost POL pullets. I had great luck last year selling the females. But, if anyone wants to buy some unsexed chicks now, let me know. I'll be hatching some more EE in a few weeks.

I also have to add that my NN that hatched out reminds me of Gomez Addams:

I've never seen a Polish. (Besides pics) The Hubby wants to get some Wyandottes, if we can find them at the swaps. They are our favorite breed. He loves the BLRW we bought at an Augusta swap last year. This year, I'll be looking for BLRW, SLW, GLW, and maybe some Orpingtons. Maybe a REAL Marans or 2. (Mine lays tan eggs)

I didn't like the polish rooster that I had. He turned me off to polish. Because he couldn't see he was a total spaz and space cadet. Every time he spotted me (which was when I was close to him) he thought I'd snuck up on him. I had way more important things to do than sneak up on that stupid idiot, but he'd flip out and start flapping and running all over the place, squawking. We have a family member who is mentally retarded and I was worried about the rooster and her when she came over, so I got rid of him.

These polish eggs were "extras" packed in with my speckled sussex, which I'm very appreciative of getting, I love surprises. Maybe these polish will be different and I'll like them, but I'm pretty sure I'll be selling them.

I had an EE roo that was a spaz, and I raised him from a day old chick. He attacked my daughter. Once. She smiled the whole dinner saying, "He tastes soooo good, Momma." I'm still unsure if I want to keep another roo, but I do miss the crowing. He sounded so funny ! Maybe if i find a good roo this year, I'll get him. All the rest are going to freezer camp.
