my grandparents live in gardiner and we try to make it up to the litchfield fair with them every year. i like taking the kids there because it still has the good down-homey feel to it.
anyway, i think you might be right, litchfield may be too far of a drive to justify at this point! i think i may actually meet up with klf this weekend and get some fertile mixed breed eggs from her!

Maybe you should join the Easter Hatch, Anna banana! I'm going to start collecting eggs this Friday, to go in the incubator a week later. I'm also getting shipped eggs. I don't have a 55 degree closet here, so this is my method for storing the eggs until I set them: I put a cooler in the house with about an inch of water in the bottom (humidity is good). I put 2 quart size containers of ice in the bottom of the cooler, and then put a rack or piece of cardboard over that to put the eggs on. I put a 2x4 under one side of the cooler, and move it to the other side twice a day, to "rotate" the eggs, and change the ice each morning.

Weasels are the worst -- horrible little varmits !! I hope you catch it -- I had an elder that used to put traps with chicken and fish on the sides of trees to trap them -- they were like a rat trap but he hung them on trees with bait --- They make purty braid wraps after they are tanned lol -- Hoppy or anyone that may have some available - I have a friend looking for sizzles or frizzles -- any for sale ? She said she would even buy eggs and try hatching them if I could find some for her . Thanks ~~~ Tammy

To keep eggs viable before I have a full load for the incubator, I put them in a spare egg turner in a cool area.

That way they are "turned" automatically.

I'm going to try and hatch some silver spangled hamburgs and if I can get a rooster possibly some silver pheonix's this spring! I have 2 pregnant rabbits 1 angora and 1 mini rex, hoping to have some babies to sell at the swaps this year! I will be going to the swaps in Wilton, Augusta, Skowhegan, and possibly Waterville. Hoping to see a lot of people on April first at Wilton!

I'll probably have some sizzle eggs if my white silkie roos figure it out. I had 100% infertile eggs from that pen. my paint pen on the other hand is going great but I keep losing girls that want to be broody instead of laying eggs.
I have a nephew that is just starting learn taxadermy and tanning, hoping if we get the vermit, I can give him to zack. I will try the tree trick, we have the "rat traps"

of course the one day we have all this melting I am expecting a tractor trailer truck to come down my driveway (and hope it doesn't get stuck!

) boy I so wish he had come this morning when it still cold and frozen. tomorrow is supposed to be warmer, so if he comes tomorrow, it could be worse.
on e a good note, I have a new little paint silkie baby. adorable , it will get more spotting as it gets older.

I haven't posted on BYC for awhile, but I just had to get on here and share how pleased I am with the Blue Seal in Windham! The other night, I found that my electric poultry water heater had malfunctioned. This is only the second winter I've had it. When I inspected it, the pad on the bottom was detaching from the metal with a pocket inflated like a balloon pushing it away from the base of the unit. While paying at the register for some feed and assorted items, I asked the cashier if they knew about this being an issue with the heater. The lady said that they hadn't heard of it happening before and asked me if I would like to return it! I'm not sure if she was looking at any sort of customer record with the "rewards" card I was using to know that I had purchased it there, or if she just was acknowledging that I was a regular customer, but I am very happy and grateful that I was able to make an exchange!
They definitely have a very satisfied and loyal customer here!

It's my second hatching, I'm using the LG still air (blah). I got a just-under 50% hatch rate last year (then 3 fatalities I think). It's a borrowed LG... I never ended up getting the incubator that I really wanted this year. (Sigh.) I put my eggs in the closet in the office as I collect them. It's about 55 degrees in there. I only collect for 3-4 days and then assume that they will get too old, but I've heard of people hatching older. Last year I was less discriminatory with egg condition and I think that (along with the poor quality incubator) accounted for my low hatch rate. This year I'm not putting in any that were not still slightly warm to the touch when collected. I'm not putting in ones with imperfections in the shell (I hold them to the light and if the shell has lots of light areas, or is too rough to the touch, or has visible lumps or striations it goes in the fridge to eat.


I think I offered before, but I have fertile mutt eggs you could try. The gas money might not make it worth the drive to Litchfield, though. Good luck!

they only people I find that don't like hatching have one of 2 problems, eggs don't hatch or can't get rid of what they hatch.
once you get an incubator that works well, you'll have a hard time to stop hatching- you know.... chicken math
