My Hubby got me my first incubator today !
wee.gif
It looked so sad sitting there all empty, so I just ordered a dozen Marans eggs and a dozen Orpington eggs. I guess I will be selling at the swaps this year instead of just buying !

I hope you didn't get your marans and orps where I got mine. good luck though!

Candled some bantam eggs I have in the incubator, at least half I could see veins, and stuff, they are only like 4 days in there. I bought 8 buff silkie chicks today and 6 assorted bantams! Really happy! All chicks have all their correct number of toes and their feathers/chick fur are nice!

Congratulations kinsey228! :) Hatching is always exciting for me. I am trying some of my own eggs, along with shipped Marans, Wheaten/BW Ameraucanas, and Marraduna Basque. It looks like at least half of the shipped eggs are developing, so I'm hopeful that some will hatch. What kind if incubator did you get? Good luck on your hatch!

so, got home and code enforcement just left. They will get back to us but said we are not allowed to have ANY chickens. My husband said "my name is (*), I live in Maine, and I own chickens and that is the way it is going to be". One of my neighbors apparently complained. What I HATE is that they were cowardly and didn't come talk to us about it. If they had they would have known that we just culled a ton of roos a few days ago and are going to cull more. Then the new coops are going to have stockade fence on the other property that they wouldnt even hear them on.

They also told dh that if we were allowed to own chickens that they are not allowed to free range. Dh asked why not, they are on our property? They said it is a state law now?

I tell you all something. I am going to feel bad for the neighbor that didn't call if I have to get rid of all my chickens because I will become a problem neighbor to all. I will make sure everything I do JUST stays under the legal limit and they will be sorry....from the noise to the vehicles....heck, I will buy and extra car to stick in the yard to pull apart and look crappy just to piss them off

. Radio volume just under allowed decible level starting earliest allowed and ending latest allowed. Dh told me not to get upset yet but I know how this is going to play out. I have thousands of dollars of birds and because I can't sell them due to my Mareks problem last year(eggs are perfectly safe) I will have to kill them all. My kids will be heartbroken(which enrages me even more).

When we got chickens we were told we could have 20, and then the rules changed and now we are not allowed to have any where we are zoned.

I will also bet money it is one of my newer neighbors that complained, the chickens were here years before they were......they knew they were here before they bought the house. Funny thing is once the last coops were constructed the chickens wouldn't have even been seen, and only slightly heard. What the heck am I supposed to do with two 8 x 12 buildings??? Like I said, they will pay if I have to get rid of my babies.....

(yes, I know this sounds juvenile, but I don't really care right now)

I'd be angry, too. If chickens were allowed when you first got them, you should be grandfathered in.

There are plenty of ways to fight this, you just have to be organized and ready to do it. You sound like you're ready for a fight. First I'd go talk to your neighbors, and offer eggs, and ask if they have any complaints about noise/smell/wandering chickens. Go from there. I think most things can be smoothed over by talking to the neighbors. I had 7 roosters crowing last fall almost constantly - went to the neighbors (even though it's legal here) and offered a dozen eggs and told them they'd be going very shortly as soon as I could do it. One of the neighbors said it was driving her a bit nuts, but just having me acknowledge it made her feel better.

What I don't understand is this is Maine. We are a rural state. Unless you live in the "big cities" of Portland, Bangor, etc (which allow limited number of hens) how can there be complaints? Right down the street from me is a field for crops, a day care, a used car dealership and a cow farm. Oh and a gun range. That's Maine.

I will downsize if required, but not eliminate. I suspect it is the house 2 down that has their house on the market but the part that irks me most is the cowardice. We usually give eggs to all the neighbors for free, but only in the past couple of weeks have I been able to collect eating eggs and my fridge is ready for the kids to deliver the eggs, not feeling like I want to now though....

Oh that just really sucks.

I am so sorry you had to go home to that. Especially since you were so kind and were bringing me eggs at the time.

And I for one don't think it is juvenile to want some form of revenge. Everything you suggested is legal and would certainly make a statement. More fun would be to record Guineas and Peacocks. Now there's sounds that would irritate.
