Maine

Thank you for the warm welcome. Yesterday we candled our eggs and I am happy to say that there were only two out of the 12 red star speckled sussex crosses. Today is Day 11!! I'm soo excited

Happy Spring to everyone!
It's been a while since I checked in so I missed alot of posts,I can't seem to get them sent to me.
Anyway, my one little banty hen I had left just hatched two Royal Palm turkeys, I brought them all in the house as I have no way to separate them from the rest of the flock right now. They sure are cute. My turkey hen is sitting on a few more, this morning, she had a partially hatched dead chick under her. She chose my big wheelbarrow to lay in so I swapped wheelbarrows out and gave her the smaller one, so I could have my big one to use.
My birds free range during the day and the Tom that was with her found a small harem of wild hens and has taken off with them.

I see him every once in a while. My roomie says he is must have been a Lewiston tom! I will be watching for funny colored wild turkeys. What are the hunting laws for cross bred turkeys?

Last year, I was not sure what I wanted to start outwith so I got a few Cochins, Orpingtons, Barred Rock, and a couple of Ameracuanas. They all did well. I also got some golden comets for egg production, they have been super easy.

I am looking for Ameracuanas, Russian Orloff, and Midget White turkeys, and a replacement Royal Palm tom if I can find one I can afford.
Also any suggestions for a cold hardy dark brown egg layer?

Who is bringing what to the Augusta swap next weekend?

Hey all! Haven't been on here in forever but I'm now facing a dilemna and I need your help. I'm up in WAY northern Maine. I have a pair of call ducks, Daffy and Prissy. Sadly, I found Prissy dead this morning. She had been sick for a couple of days. We thought she was getting ready to lay her first egg. Unfortunately, I think she died from being egg bound, but I can't bring myself to find out for sure. Anyway, I don't want Daffy to be lonely so I'm hoping to find another female bantam duck that I could buy/adopt. Can anyone help me out? It doesn't have to be a call duck but obviously I'd like it to be a bantam. I'm willing to travel a bit to get her. Can someone please point me in a good direction?

I just have to say what a wonderful hen I have. last night I got an egg from her pen (she's the only hen in there), collected an egg this morning and wow, another tonight. she's unbelievable. wish I was collecting her eggs to hatch rather then eat but i have enough projects going on.

just finished weeding my garden, having to hold myself back from planting anything but garlic (pulled out a ton, repotted for the swaps)

I was bad and did lettuce, spinach, cabbage, scallions and carrots yesterday in the garden. The garden was dried out, tilled and was looking good. I put a frost blanket over it, but I'm not so sure now... gunna be 16 degrees tomorrow night.

I am going out on a limb to make a candler I thought up out of a pringle can and a night light

Thanks to Hoppy for my son's new chicks! He loves them and named them Easter (all of them). This picture is right after he opened the box! Great meeting you :)
